Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used to acquire measurement data for an increasing number of applications. Photogrammetric studies based on UAV data, thanks the significant development computer vision techniques, photogrammetry, and equipment miniaturization, allow sufficient accuracy many engineering non-engineering applications be achieved. In addition accuracy, time cost acquisition processing also important issues. The aim this paper is present potential limitations in use UAVs techniques affecting optimisation work both terms economy. Issues related type drones (multi-rotor, fixed-wing), shutter camera (rolling shutter, global ), calibration method (pre-calibration, self-calibration), georeferencing (direct, indirect), technique measuring external images orientation parameters (RTK, PPK, PPP), flight design methods software were analysed.

Georeferencing using ground control points (GCPs) is the most common strategy in photogrammetry modeling unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-acquired imagery. With increased availability of UAVs with onboard global navigation satellite system–real-time kinematic (GNSS RTK), georeferencing without GCPs becoming a promising alternative. However, systematic elevation error remains problem this technique. We aimed to analyze reasons for and propose strategies its elimination. Multiple flights differing flight altitude image acquisition axis were performed at two real-world sites. A height 100 m vertical (nadiral) was considered primary, supplemented altitudes 75 125 oblique axes (30° 15°). Each these twice produce full double grid. Models reconstructed from individual their combinations. The or even combinations yielded errors up several decimeters. This linearly dependent on deviation focal length reference value. combination same (with nadiral acquisition) capable reducing less than 0.03 m. study first demonstrate linear dependence between models based only GNSS RTK data determined internal orientation parameters (focal length). In addition, we have shown that different can eliminate conditions is, therefore, feasible alternative use GCPs.

Lately, affordable unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-lidar systems have started to appear on the market, highlighting need for methods facilitating proper verification of their accuracy. However, dense point cloud produced by such makes identification individual points that could be used as reference difficult. In this paper, we propose a method utilizing accurately georeferenced targets covered with high-reflectivity foil, which can easily extracted from cloud; centers determined and calculation systematic shift lidar cloud. Subsequently, is cleaned compared SfM cloud, thus yielding residual We successfully applied evaluation an DJI ZENMUSE L1 scanner mounted UAV Matrice 300 found accuracies system (3.5 cm in all directions after removal global georeferencing error) are better than manufacturer-declared values (10/5 horizontal/vertical). color information revealed relatively high (approx. 0.2 m) shift.
