Adolescent depression is a globally concerned mental health issue, the pathophysiological mechanisms of which remain elusive. Membrane lipids play crucial role in brain development and function, potentially serving as crossroad for abnormalities neurotransmitters, neuroendocrine, inflammation, oxidative stress, energy metabolism observed depressed adolescents. The primary aim this study was to investigate erythrocyte membrane lipid profile adolescent depression. A total 2838 were detected quantified 81 adolescents with 67 matched healthy using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Depressed exhibited significantly different characteristics compared controls. Specifically, levels cholesterol, sphingomyelins, ceramides increased, while ether decreased patients. Moreover, patients showed reduced polyunsaturated fatty acids elevated lipophilic index membrane, suggesting diminished fluidity. higher oxidized plasma malondialdehyde depression, indicating presence stress. Importantly, damage associated more severe depressive symptoms worse cognitive function In addition, fluidity may be partly responsible blunted niacin skin flushing response found conclusion, our results reveal impaired homeostasis implicate dysfunction brain. These findings offer new insights into underlying molecular highlighting potential counteracting promising avenue future therapeutic interventions.

ABSTRACT Introduction Substance use disorders, particularly alcohol represent a significant public health problem, with adolescents vulnerable to their adverse effects. This study examined the possible anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of biotin, crucial vitamin for brain function, in attenuating behavioral neurobiological changes associated withdrawal adolescent rats. Materials Methods Sixty male Sprague–Dawley rats were exposed 20% ethanol solution 21 days, followed by 21‐day drug‐free period assess long‐term physiological changes. Behavioral assessments included Open Field Test, Elevated Plus Maze, Forced Swimming administered post‐withdrawal evaluate anxiety depression behaviors. Additionally, biochemical analyses performed measure serotonin levels, monoamine oxidase‐A (MAO‐A) activity, BDNF concentrations. Results The results indicate that significantly induced anxiety‐ depression‐like behavior However, treatment at higher doses, effectively attenuated these withdrawal‐related Mechanistically, biotin administration was found regulate oxidase brain‐derived neurotrophic factor, glial fibrillary acidic protein, alleviate oxidative stress markers cortical tissue. Discussion this suggest may have therapeutic potential alleviating negative withdrawal, those related depression. Further research is needed elucidate underlying mechanisms examine clinical supplementation individuals undergoing withdrawal.

Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a persistent psychiatric condition that causes significant clinical and functional impairments. Recent research suggests link between deficiencies in micronutrients, particularly vitamin B12, folic acid, elevated homocysteine, the development of OCD. This study investigates blood levels these micronutrients their relationship to OCD severity, with an emphasis on potential gender differences. Methods cross-sectional included 300 drug-free patients. Serum homocysteine were measured using established biochemical methods. The Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) was used assess severity. Data examined determine relationships micronutrient severity differences male female Results found women had higher B12 (405.3 ± 15.1 vs. 360.4 14.3) acid (7.18 0.27 5.76 0.25) but lower (9.35 0.64 14.4 0.60) compared men. Higher linked participants having education (at college or university, where subjects are studied at advanced level) those primary-level education. Lower family mental health history noncommunicable diseases. Women exhibited substance use rates self-harm suicide attempts. Elevated longer illness duration more severe symptoms. Conclusion These findings suggest imbalances may contribute treatment resistance. Gender-specific variations could provide valuable insights into personalized therapy choices. Further longitudinal studies needed understand as therapeutic targets.

Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) like pastries, packaged snacks, fast foods, and sweetened beverages have become dominant in the modern food supply are strongly associated with numerous public health concerns. Background: Substance use disorders (SUDs) represent a significant global public health challenge, with affected individuals often exhibiting poor dietary habits, nutritional deficiencies, and compromised mental physical health. This scoping review evaluates existing literature on intake in SUDs, focusing the potential benefits of plant-based interventions for improving status supporting recovery. Methods: A was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Four databases were searched using PICO-based terms, targeting studies assessing patients SUD, particularly interventions. Inclusion criteria reporting macro- micronutrient among while lacking direct data excluded. Study quality appraised STROBE checklist. Results: The search yielded 1142 articles, 6 meeting inclusion (4 from United States 2 Iran). Patients SUD exhibited deficiencies iron (−16.8%, P = .04), folate (−15.0%, vitamins E A, alongside diets high simple carbohydrates unhealthy processed foods. Plant-based associated improved Healthy Eating Index scores ( < .001), increased resilience (+31%, .031), enhanced self-esteem .043). High energy low multivitamin reported methadone-treated patients, emphasizing need to address nutrient gaps support Conclusion: may offer promising strategy improve outcomes SUD. However, are limited, small sample sizes variability assessments.
