The relationship between handgrip strength (HGS) at baseline and subsequent depressive symptoms among middle-aged older Chinese adults remains highly uncertain. This research endeavored to investigate the effect of functional limitation on association these two variables. A total 5,684 participants aged ≥45 years from China Longitudinal Study Health Retirement (CHARLS) were enrolled, using data 2015 2018 waves. Functional was evaluated based participants' self-reported basic activities daily living (BADL) instrumental (IADL). Logistic regression models utilized analyze HGS symptoms, bootstrap analysis performed explore potential mediating role limitation. After adjusting for confounders, an inverse correlation detected (B = -0.885, p < 0.001), a positive found 1.054, 0.001). mediated size through a*b -0.933 (BCa 95% CI: -1.224, -0.642). had significant impact 18.9% overall association. Among senior population, accounted connection symptoms. Interventions targeting enhancement muscle should be regarded as crucial elements maintaining physical function preventing
