Collagen is the main protein found in skin, bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and connective tissue, it can exhibit properties ranging from compliant to rigid or form gradients between these states. The collagen family comprises 28 members, each containing at least one triple-helical domain. These proteins play critical roles maintaining mechanical characteristics, tissue organization, structural integrity. Collagens regulate cellular processes such as proliferation, migration, differentiation through interactions with cell surface receptors. Fibrillar collagens, most abundant extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, provide organs tissues stability connectivity. In mammalian myocardial interstitium, types I III collagens are predominant: organs, tendons, bones; II cartilage; reticular fibers; IV basement membranes; V nails hair. Recombinant human particularly sponge-like porous formats combined bone morphogenetic serve effective scaffolds for repair. Due their biocompatibility low immunogenicity, pivotal engineering applications wound regeneration. technology enables production of amino acid sequences identical tissue-derived collagens. This review summarizes recent advances molecular functions recombinant expression a focus on biomedical applications.
