Abstract
This
chapter
turns
introduces
the
idea
of
urban
propertyscapes,
which
refers
to
patterns
residential
and
commercial
property
development
in
a
given
city,
how
this
is
arranged
across
space,
it
relates
land
regimes
politics
regulation.
After
examining
post-conflict
evolution
real
estate
sector
three
cities,
delineates
basic
incentives
constraints
these
have
channelled
ever
more
resources
into
‘secondary
circuit’
capital,
drawing
away
from
productive
investment.
It
then
considers
questions
housing
provision,
particularly
Addis
Ababa,
site
one
Africa’s
most
extraordinary
state-driven
experiments,
why
so
little
has
been
built
other
cases.
In
concluding
comparative
discussion,
argues
that
different
distributions
power
strategies
legitimation
are
central
accounting
for
emergent
propertyscapes
region.
In
many
cities
and
urban
areas
in
Africa,
land
acquisition
for
redevelopment,
readjustment,
resettlement
of
affected
residents
are
currently
framed
as
innovative
approaches
to
eradicating
informal
settlements,
improving
the
living
environments,
supporting
implementation
newly
adopted
city
Master
Plans.
Nevertheless,
it
is
not
yet
known
how
responses
institutions
people
shape
these
processes.
Based
on
research
conducted
Kigali,
Rwanda,
this
article
discusses
residents’
expropriation
necessary
redevelopments.
Our
findings
show
that
settlement
dwellers
voiced
their
concerns
over
deviations
from
Expropriation
Law,
compensation
decision-making
made
behind
closed
doors,
lack
transparency
property
valuation,
packages
they
perceive
be
unfair.
Some
consequences
strong
feelings
unfairness,
exclusion,
marginalisation;
distrust
increased
perceptions
impoverishment
risks,
all
which
fuel
contestation
resistance
attitudes
among
landowners.
The
landowners
agitate
assert
rights
stake
claims
through
contestations,
community
mobilisation,
legal
recourse.
We
conclude
such
contestations
constitute
claimed
spaces
interactions
laying
claim
fair
processes
against
‘’exceptionality’’
“decide-defend”
approaches,
while
local
authorities
legitimacy
decisions.
Critically,
households
by
redevelopments
see
opportunities
participation
fundamental
securing
future.

Abstract
Despite
the
rise
of
global
technocratic
ideals
city-making,
cities
around
world
are
not
merging
into
indistinguishable
duplicates
one
another.
In
fact,
as
urbanizes,
urban
formations
remain
diverse
in
their
socio-economic
and
spatial
characteristics,
with
varying
potential
to
foster
economic
development
social
justice.
This
book
argues
that
these
differences
primarily
rooted
politics,
if
we
continue

technological
projects

managed
rather
than
terrains

bargaining
contestation,

better

There

In
a
bid
to
become
global
cities
and
centers
of
innovation,
many
African
have
embraced
rapid
physical
transformation
as
the
default
urban
development
paradigm.
However,
this
mantra
is
exacting
significant
social
cost.
At

land
expropriation,
granting
governments
power
accumulate
in

public
interest.
Focusing
on
Kigali
case
study
employing
livelihood
asset
framework
snowball
sampling
technique,
we
examine
impact
expropriation
endowment
well-being

individuals.
Results
reveal
complex
picture.
Expropriation

physical,
financial,
leading
impoverishment.

poverty

security

Abstract
This
article
is
about
green
capitalism,
demolition,
and
the
production
of
housing
scarcity
in
Kigali,
Rwanda.
It
follows
Kiyovu
cy'abakene—a
real
place
that
was
near
zero‐carbon,
built
with
renewable
resources,
owned
operated
by
Kigali
residents—as
it
first
reimagined
as
a
rhetorical
“slum”
then
converted
into
an
actual
one
force.
And
design
construction
Batsinda
Housing
estate,
sustainable
solution
to
fictional
“crisis”
inadequate
Kigali.
Drawing
on
several
years
ethnographic
research,
I
argue
many
cities
like
it,
destruction
environments
not
only
local
elites
who
wish
demolish
“slums”
or
“informal
settlements”
build
“world‐class”
luxury
cities.
The
demolition
neighborhoods
displacement
people

states

governments,

pricing
