Intensive aquaculture in high-density hybrid snakehead [Channa maculata (♀) × Channa argus (♂)] fishponds can lead to toxic conditions for fish. This study investigated nitrogen migration and transformation these during different cultivation periods. Using qPCR technology, we analyzed the abundance variation of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms water sediment reveal metabolism characteristics fishponds. The results showed that fish biomass significantly impacts suspended particulate matter (SPM) flux. At sediment–water interface, inorganic fluxes predominant NO3−-N absorption by sediments NH4+-N NO2−-N release, especially later stages. Abstract Aquatic ecosystems are often impacted by a multitude of stressors, many which introduced combination anthropogenic activities such as agricultural development, urbanization, damming, and industrial discharge. Determining the primary stressors responsible for ecological impairments at site can be complex challenging; however, it is crucial making informed management decisions. Improper diagnosis an impaired system lead to misguided attempts remediation, both time consuming costly. We focused on implementation, evaluation methodologies that, in combination, allowed us identify stressors. These included four‐phase, weight‐of‐evidence (WOE) assessment including situ Toxicity Identification Evaluation (iTIE) testing, physicochemical macrobenthos characterization, reciprocal sediment transplants, laboratory toxicity testing. The contaminants concern (COCs) were elevated levels ammonia, chloride, pH, total dissolved solids groundwater upwellings into high‐quality waterway. Reciprocal transplants sediments nearby reference traditional benthic sampling showed indices multiple stations around contaminated settling basin. Impaired had COCs groundwaters but exhibited steep vertical concentration gradient, with concentrations decreasing near sediment–surface water interface. describe Phase 4 study, teasing out role oxygen sags macroinvertebrate responses. Extensive submerged emergent macrophytes, algae, cyanobacteria co‐occurred sites increased throughout summer. Laboratory testing suggested that ammonia pH possibly toxic sites, based concentrations. occurring even low concurrently large diurnal fluxes (DO). A final phase using type iTIE approach utilized limnocorrals without aeration measures Hyalella azteca . revealed DO primarily communities, COC diluted sediment–water interface nontoxic levels. findings will allow improved decisions more efficient effective restoration activities.
