Purpose: The main purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship among rural tourism development, land use structure and ecosystem, provide decision-making basis for sustainable development destination. The urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of Yangtze River holds a crucial strategic position China’s economic and social development landscape. Unveiling the spatial and temporal distribution of urban ecological resilience analyzing configuration paths for enhancing its levels are crucial promoting sustainable development in China. Our study integrates DPSIR EES models, considering causal relationships between systems affecting while also examining their internal structures. Based on this, we construct an evaluation system indicators. Utilizing entropy-TOPSIS method, assess index (ERI) across 280 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2021, kernel density estimation Markov chain used evolution process magnitude source spatial–regional differences examined by Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition method. Additionally, empirically investigate driving mechanisms toward high ERI with focused stepwise quantitative case analysis (fsQCA) method based technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework. The results find that China shows a tendency moderate growth variability, obvious gradient distribution: higher eastern southern lower western northern regions. Also, exhibits evolutionary features increasing polarization inter-regional differentiation. Spatial disparities gradually increase fluctuations, driven primarily transvariation intra-regional differences, contributing dual non-equilibrium state east–west north–south directions. This study adopts super-efficiency slacks-based measure (SBM) model to evaluate eco-efficiency 208 cities in 19 urban agglomerations China from 2006 2020, kernel density estimation spatial econometric specifications are combined reveal spatial–temporal evolution.
