Using the socioscientific issue approach to foster secondary students’ argumentation skills, science self-efficacy beliefs and science interest

Socio-scientific
issues
(SSI)
are
open-ended
social
problems
with
substantive
connections
to
science.
They
represent
the
kind
of
situations
in
which
many
people
must
decide
between
different
perspectives
and
decisions.
Therefore,
using
these
formal
science
education
provides
an
ideal
approach
for
promoting
scientific
literacy
moral
education.
We
designed
a
series
seven
lessons
that
aimed
build
relevant
skills
young
so
they
can
participate
responsibly
pandemic
response
measures.
In
study,
three
classes
49
Grade
9
students
formed
basis
mixed-methods
analysis.
measured
knowledge,
attitudes,
argumentation
skills.
Science
interest
self-efficacy
beliefs
increased,
although
showed
no
growth
on
average
knowledge
test.
Unexpectedly,
significant
development
value
attitudes
was
detected.
However,
socioscientific
accountability
turned
out
be
helpful
explaining
differences
efficacy
beliefs.
Argumentation
seemed
dependent
students'
socioeconomic
status
(SES)
only.
Various
proposals
further
studies
hitherto
little-studied
interactions
variables
SSI
understanding
discussed.

Inquiry
(SSRI)
model
improving

a
quasi-experimental
pretest-posttest
non-equivalent
control
group
design,
which
involved
measuring
skills
before
after
intervention
two
groups:
experimental
(44
students)
inquiry
(46
learning.
Differences
pretest
posttest
scores
on
each
aspect
were
analyzed
using
paired
sample
t-test,
while
an
independent
t-test
was
compare
between
groups.
Analyze
effect
size
Cohen's
Effect
Size
(ES).
The
results
showed
SSRI
more
effective
than
findings
suggest
be
approach
for
empowering
educators
guiding
educational
policymakers
fostering
essential
future
generations.

Tackling
climate
change
is
one
of
the
most
pressing
issues
faced
by
societies
around
world.
Climate
education
(CCE)
therefore
great
importance.
Moreover,
previous
research
has
shown
that
addressing
science
concepts
behind
societal
such
as
crisis
can
reduce
gender
gap
in
science.
The
present
study
used
bibliometric
methods
to
provide
an
overview
field
CCE
research.
Based
on
1447
articles
CCE,
retrieved
from
Web
Science
database,
we
identified
relevant
journals
field,
highly
cited
articles,
and
collaborations
between
countries
undertaking
Thematic
mapping
analyses
author
keywords
indicate
socio-scientific
are
important
topic
field.
However,
disparities
only
addressed
a
very
limited
extent,
which
demonstrates
still
untapped
potential
for
engage
young
women
STEM.

In
this
study,
an
assessment
tool
was
developed
to
measure
the
reasoning
skills
(RS)
of
preservice
science
teachers
on
socio-scientific
issues
(SSI).
As
a
result
literature
review,

different
perspectives,
skeptical

and
