As the integration of digital economy into real accelerates and goals green low-carbon development become increasingly clear, promoting innovation (GI) through digital–real (DRI) is great practical significance for achieving green, high-quality urban development. This study, based on a sample 284 prefecture-level cities above in China, used entropy method to measure levels each city employed coupling coordination model calculate degree DRI. By constructing bidirectional fixed effects model, mediation effect threshold regression spatial Durbin this study explored impact DRI GI cities. The research found that has non-linear GI. When city’s level surpasses second threshold, 1% increase leads 1.439% rise also shows heterogeneity location resource endowment. In process, transaction costs upgrading industry structure serve as mediating factors, with reducing by 0.163% enhancing industrial coefficient 0.176. Additionally, one can significantly enhance neighboring spillover effects. For instance, under geographic distance weighting matrix, indirect reaches 4.693, similar significant are observed economic geography matrices.
