Independent Research Ethics Committees (RECs) are responsible for protecting the rights and safety of participants involved in research studies. They also promote values ethics ensure quality clinical In emergencies, we expect a significant increase activities but it is crucial to maintain both studies respect participants’ rights. At onset SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, World Health Organization recommended an “expedited” approach REC approvals. This was intended streamline optimize review procedures prevent delays that critical responding global emergency. The authors evaluated activity Inter-company Committee (IEC) Turin, Italy, from January 2020 December 2022 comparing COVID-19-related protocols with those were not related COVID-19. Statistical analyses applied find if there statistically differences variables’ distributions between two groups characteristics (total 1,667), including study design, funding, enrollment minors, analyzed. found three variables: type, financial support, distribution revised by applicants’ medical specialties. findings underscore need careful attention ethical principles during especially given large number projects reviewed EC.
