Jeju, the largest island in Korea, is most economically important terms of marine aquaculture. We investigated viral composition adjacent to Jeju Island over four seasons 2022 and sequenced DNA libraries extracted from samples March, June, September, December using Illumina HiSeq 2000. obtained 212,402, 186,542, 235,441, 224,513 contigs four-season samples, respectively. Among identified metagenomes, bacteriophages were dominant all samples. Bacillus phage G was species March whereas Pelagibacter HTVC 008M September December. Additionally, number viruses that infected algal hosts higher than other seasons. Marine appeared vertebrates such as fish. Functional analysis MG-RAST revealed cell wall- capsule-related metabolism groups activated virulence-, disease-, defense-related Conclusively, this study seasonal changes communities sea Island. Our data will be useful identifying emerging pathogens for further community studies on organisms.

Abstract Soil microorganisms are pivotal in the global carbon cycle, but viruses that affect them and their impact on ecosystems less understood. In this study, we explored diversity, dynamics, ecology of soil through 379 metagenomes collected annually from 2010 to 2017. These samples spanned seasonally thawed active layer a permafrost thaw gradient, which included palsa, bog, fen habitats. We identified 5051 virus operational taxonomic units (vOTUs), doubling known for site. vOTUs were largely ephemeral within habitats, suggesting turnover at vOTU level year year. While diversity varied by stage depth‐related patterns specific each habitat, communities did not significantly change over time. The abundance ratios host phylum show consistent trends across depth, or To assess potential ecosystem impacts, predicted hosts silico found linked microbial lineages involved such as methanotrophy methanogenesis. This identification Candidatus Methanoflorens, significant methane contributor. also detected variety auxiliary metabolic genes, including 24 carbon‐degrading glycoside hydrolases, six uniquely terrestrial. conclusion, these long‐term observations enhance our understanding context climate‐relevant processes provide opportunities explore role terrestrial cycling.

Recent decades have seen growing attention on viruses in the environment and their potential impacts as a result of global epidemics. Due to diversity viral species along with complexity environmental host factors, virus extraction detection methods become key for study ecology. This review systematically summarises extracting detecting pathogens from different samples (e.g., soil, water, faeces, air) biological plants, animals) existing studies, comparing similarities differences, applicability, well advantages disadvantages each method. Additionally, this discusses future directions research field. The aim is provide theoretical foundation technical reference ecology research, facilitating further exploration applications

Viruses are implicated to play key roles as biogeochemical mediators and ecological drivers in freshwater ecosystems. However, the dynamics of viruses host associations throughout seasons during blooming periods eutrophic ecosystems remain poorly understood. From water microbiomes planktonic biomass from Lake Taihu, a large lake China that experiences annual Microcystis-dominated harmful algal blooms (HABs), we recovered 41,997 unique viral clusters spanning wide taxonomic range, including 15,139 Caudovirales targeting bacteria 1,044 NCLDV eukaryotes. The community exhibited clear seasonal succession, driven primarily by microbial communities (particularly Cyanobacteria Planctomycetes) environmental factors (mainly nutrients temperature). Host prediction revealed infection had more distinct impact on bacteria-driven nitrogen pathways than phosphate cycling. HAB-induced variations composition conditions affected strategies lifestyles, virus-encoded auxiliary metabolic genes (vAMGs) distributions. infecting Proteobacteria Actinobacteria showed an enhanced lysogenic lifestyle narrower range HAB peak summer, while Bacteroidota adopted opposite strategy. Notably, vAMGs were most abundant before outbreak spring, compensating for bacterial processes their hosts such carbohydrates metabolism, photosynthesis, regulation. findings highlight intricate relationships between viruses, microbes, bloom-associated environment, underscoring important biochemical
