Virus ecology and 7‐year temporal dynamics across a permafrost thaw gradient

Abstract
Soil
microorganisms
are
pivotal
in
the
global
carbon
cycle,
but
viruses
that
affect
them
and
their
impact
on
ecosystems
less
understood.
In
this
study,
we
explored
diversity,
dynamics,
ecology
of
soil
through
379
metagenomes
collected
annually
from
2010
to
2017.
These
samples
spanned
seasonally
thawed
active
layer
a
permafrost
thaw
gradient,
which
included
palsa,
bog,
fen
habitats.
We
identified
5051
virus
operational
taxonomic
units
(vOTUs),
doubling
known
for
site.
vOTUs
were
largely
ephemeral
within
habitats,
suggesting
turnover
at
vOTU
level
year
year.
While
diversity
varied
by
stage
depth‐related
patterns
specific
each
habitat,
communities
did
not
significantly
change
over
time.
The
abundance
ratios
host
phylum
show
consistent
trends
across
depth,
or

Recent
decades

ecology.
This
review
systematically
summarises
extracting

different

faeces,
air)

plants,

studies,
comparing
similarities
differences,
applicability,
well
advantages
disadvantages
each
method.
Additionally,
this
discusses
future
directions
research
field.

Viruses
are
implicated
to
play
key
roles
as
biogeochemical
mediators
and
ecological
drivers
in
freshwater
ecosystems.
However,
the
dynamics
of
viruses
host
associations
throughout
seasons
during
blooming
periods
eutrophic
ecosystems
remain
poorly
understood.
From
water
microbiomes
planktonic
biomass
from
Lake
Taihu,
a
large
lake
China
that
experiences
annual
Microcystis-dominated
harmful
algal
blooms
(HABs),
we
recovered
41,997
unique
viral
clusters
spanning
wide
taxonomic
range,
including
15,139
Caudovirales
targeting
bacteria
1,044
NCLDV
eukaryotes.
The
community
exhibited
clear
seasonal
succession,
driven
primarily
by
microbial
communities
(particularly
Cyanobacteria
Planctomycetes)
environmental
factors
(mainly
nutrients
temperature).
Host
prediction
revealed
infection
had
more
distinct
impact
on
bacteria-driven
nitrogen
pathways
than
phosphate
cycling.
HAB-induced
variations
composition
conditions
affected
strategies
lifestyles,
virus-encoded
auxiliary
metabolic
genes
(vAMGs)
distributions.
infecting
Proteobacteria
Actinobacteria
showed
an
enhanced
lysogenic
lifestyle
narrower
range
HAB
peak
summer,
while
Bacteroidota
adopted
opposite
strategy.
Notably,
vAMGs
were
most
abundant
before
outbreak
spring,
compensating
for
bacterial
processes
their
hosts
such
carbohydrates
metabolism,
photosynthesis,
regulation.
