The effects of polyethylene terephthalate micro-nanoplastics (PET-MNPs) were tested on the model freshwater species Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid., with focus possible particle-induced epigenetic (i.e. alteration DNA methylation status). MNPs (size ∼ 200-300 nm) produced as water dispersions from PET bottles through repeated cycles homogenization and used to prepare N-medium at two environmentally relevant concentrations (∼0.05 g L

Microplastics (MP) have become a well-known and widely investigated environmental pollutant. Despite the huge amount of new studies investigating potential threat posed by MP, possible uptake trophic transfer in lower levels freshwater ecosystems remains understudied. This study aims to investigate internalization fluorescent polystyrene (PS) beads (0.5 μm, 3.6 × 108 particles/mL; 6 2.1 105 particles/mL) fragments (<30 5 103 three unicellular eukaryotes. focuses on size-dependent MP two Ciliophora, Tetrahymena pyriformis, Paramecium caudatum one Amoebozoa, Amoeba proteus, serving also as predator for experiments transfer. Size-dependent all eukaryotes was shown. P. is able take up 27.7 while T. pyriformis ingests particles 10 μm. In A. proteus small (PS0.5μm PS6μm) were taken via pinocytosis detected cytoplasm 14 days after exposure. Large PS-MP (PS<30μm) only predation MP-fed Ciliophora. These results indicate that larger Ciliophora (PS<30μm), which would not be otherwise. shows at base aquatic food web serves basis impact ecosystems.

The Arctic Ocean is undergoing several transformations because of global climate change. Small microplastics (SMPs) or nanoplastics (NPs) carried by marine aerosols may settle in the land ice and be released to waters, produced following its melting. As sea extent reduces shipping fishing activities increase, (MPs) enter region ocean maritime transports, with implications on biota, human health, socioeconomic issues related exploitation resources. First analyses amphipods collected Ny-Ålesund confirmed presence SMPs. Nevertheless, threat posed SMPs/NPs polar biota regional health not fully understood. This article addresses this issue need for organisms as potential bioindicators plastic pollution, which currently being out Svalbard under framework MICROTRACER project funded Italian Research Program (PRA, Call 2021). outputs research are expected contribute deepening current knowledge SMPs Svalbard, providing new insights their occurrence, distribution, transfer through trophic web, realize effective control regulatory measures implement an integrated multidisciplinary approach monitoring reduce MPs pollution fragile environment.

Microplastics are plastic fragments in the size range of >1 μm to <5 mm. a global concern because their presence various ecosystems organisms and tendency hurt organisms. Due small size, microplastics can be easily ingested by organisms, including sponges. Freshwater sponges rare world. As filter feeder organism, accumulate into bodies. This study aims analyze physical characteristics microplastic abundance freshwater Porong River, Mojokerto City, East Java. Oncosclera asiatica Eunapius carteri sponge samples were taken from River at depth about 1 meter. Analysis (size, color, shape) was conducted using stereo microscope Optilab. Abstract Microplastic pollution endangers both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Their spread across the food chain also human health. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be viewed as final barrier between microplastics environment. In addition, it is well-known that water mites are abundant parasites in ecosystems, nearly all insect orders with stages considered potential hosts for at least one mite species. However, no studies have been conducted to test direct indirect effects of on population dynamics freshwater ecosystems or role predators shaping behavior life histories organisms. Thus, this work aimed study seasonal abundance, distribution, composition, risk assessment MPs surface water, insects (Coroxide Notonectidae), first time, (Hydrachnidiae), well effect mites’ parasitism number ingested by two most polluted wastewater sites (S1 S2) Sohag Governorate, Egypt. Microplastic (MP) contamination is a globally recognised issue in aquatic environments, and recently, there has been an increase investigations focusing on lake contamination, revealing significant amounts of dispersed MPs. However, our understanding the ingestion effects MPs organisms living ecosystems remains limited. This study aims to develop effective protocol for assessing by talitrid amphipod Cryptorchestia garbinii, with goal verifying evaluating biological following ingestion. Individuals sampled from shores Lake Albano were exposed four different polymers, namely low-density polyethylene (PE), terephthalate (PET), polyester (PES), polypropylene (PP), under laboratory conditions. To deliver through diet, we decided employ DECOTABs (DEcomposition COnsumption TABlets) which have successfully used as food source toxicity tests. At end experiments, employed solvatochromic fluorescent dye Nile red detect quantify present digestive tube contents animals. The results clearly demonstrate supplied polymers tabs, validating this method exposure effective. Furthermore, measurement glucose, glycogen, lipid levels reveals that within 24 h ingestion, had impact macromolecules involved energy metabolism C. garbinii. research underscores suitability species model organism studying MP uptake its effects.
