weaving

Western
Knowledge,

an
increasingly
adopted

scientific
research
perceived
as
a
promising
path
towards
advancing
management
coastal
areas
fisheries
Canada.
Despite
documented
successes,
skepticism
among
scientists
decision-makers
persists,
leaving
unaddressed
gaps.
Here,
response
to
concerns
voiced
by
fishers
from
the
Mi'gmaw
community
Ugpi'ganjiq,
Gespe'gewa'gi
Institute
Natural
Understanding
(GINU)
co-created
project
improve
understanding
ecology
state
threatened
Gumegwsis
(i.e.
Cyclopterus
lumpus,
common
lumpfish)
inner
Mawipoqtapei
(Chaleur
Bay,
Eastern
Canada).
Through
Two-Eyed
Seeing
approach,
we
combined
semi-structured
interviews
with
five
Knowledge
Holders
literature
review,
mapping,
temperature
monitoring.
Utilizing
this
framework,
learned
about
life
history
Mawipoqtapei,
its
significance
local
fishers,
changes
abundance
over
time,
threats
species,
identified
potential
for
spawning
nursery
habitats.
Prior
our
project,
Committee
on
Status
Endangered
Wildlife
Canada
(COSEWIC)
assessment
asserted
"There
are
no
indications
any
ceremonial
uses
Lumpfish
there
ATK
(Aboriginal
Traditional
Knowledge)
information
available".
In
contrast,
study
reveals
distinctive
relationship
comprehension
held
underscoring
embracing
multiple
ways
knowing
species
ecology,
presenting
compelling
case
co-creation
recovery
strategies
collaboration
research.
