Abstract Since 2017, the invasive brown alga Rugulopteryx okamurae has posed significant biological, ecological, and socio-economic challenges in Morocco due to its rapid proliferation accumulation. This study explores antimicrobial antibiofilm properties chemical composition. Methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts were evaluated for antibacterial activity against six human pathogens, including clinical reference strains of Escherichia coli Staphylococcus aureus. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) identified functional groups such as hydroxyl (O-H), carbonyl (C = O), polysaccharides, indicative bioactive compounds. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed key components: oleic acid butyl ester EtOAc extract, methyl tetradecanoate chloroform pentadecanoic methanolic extract. The potential was assessed using microdilution growth curve assays, with minimal inhibitory bactericidal concentrations ranging from 3.12–50 mg/mL. Growth analysis showed bacteriostatic effects through lag phase extension rate suppression. extract demonstrated highest activity, reducing biofilm formation by 73% E. (clinical strain TT-23) 70% S. aureus 70). These results suggest that R. contains compounds promising properties, potentially valuable mitigating impacts while offering applications development.

Non-indigenous species (NIS) are of concern for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem functioning. We present an updated list NIS, including cryptogenic species, from Danish marine waters containing 123 species. Benthic invertebrates (36%) phytoplankton (28%) dominate the list, but fish (15%) macroalgae (13%) also important. The Limfjord in Northern Jutland emerges as a hotspot introduction NIS. Data multiple sources were included, i.e., National Monitoring Program (NOVANA), Fish Atlas project, citizen science project Arter.dk, research articles, annual national reports ICES working group ITMO. Forty-six NIS subject to expert judging using modified Harmonia protocol; 19 found fulfil four selected criteria identifying being ‘invasive’. Additionally, 38 not yet recorded waters, evaluated same method, 31 ‘invasive’ criteria. For nine history, distribution maps, time-series diagrams presented. Our data document that monitoring efforts should be expanded record macrozooplankton, coastal fish, mobile epibenthic Furthermore, repository, enable more detailed documentation new records.

Although several rivers flow into Adriatic, most affected area is northern where Po River loads basin half total freshwater input, carrying causing algal blooms hypoxia phenomena. These fresh waters predominantly along entire western side, reaching southernmost part up Mediterranean Sea. Here, whole basin, variations nutrient concentration have been observed through years. Starting from 1960 until end century, increase discharge phytoplankton activity reported, with negative repercussions local fisheries, species richness, recreational activities within basin. However, a recent decrease inflow has coastal belt, which can trigger consequences for food web ecosystem. trends, more broadly, corroborate vulnerability stress importance implementing strategies defense relevant ecosystems its confines.

The Mediterranean Sea is a hotspot for the introduction of non-indigenous species. Among them, invasive alien species can seriously affect areas they colonize, not only by altering marine food webs and community structure, but also harming certain economic activities, such as fishing, tourism, aquaculture infrastructure. Canopy-forming macroalgae, such as Cystoseira sensu lato, increase the three-dimensional complexity and spatial heterogeneity of rocky reefs, enhancing biodiversity productivity in coastal areas. Extensive loss canopy algae has been recorded recent decades throughout Mediterranean Sea due to various anthropogenic pressures. In this study, we assessed biomass fish assemblages, sea urchin density, vertical distribution macroalgal communities Aegean Levantine Seas. The herbivore was significantly higher South compared North Aegean. Very low densities suggest local collapses Levantine. most sites Levantine, ecological status or very at depths deeper than 2 m, with limited no algae. many sites, were restricted a narrow, shallow zone, where grazing pressure may be harsh hydrodynamic conditions. This study addresses the imperative need for adaptation strategies to climate impacts in coastal areas, particularly vulnerable change effects. Under Interreg project “AdriaClim,” our research aims provide a comprehensive account of predicted and corresponding measures three key sectors economy Puglia region (Southern Italy): erosion, aquaculture, tourism. Analyzing regional projections, climatic anomalies Apulia have been delineated. Together with description investigated sectors, expected sectoral identified. The respective each sector evaluated terms coherence studied context effectiveness, among those proposed literature. In may influence ecosystem structure, functionality, production cycles, infrastructure, organism physiology. Integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA) emerges as solution enhance resilience Apulian aquatic systems change. For tourism, vulnerability various is emphasized. These can directly tourist flows or indirectly alter attractiveness Adriatic coast. Given sector's strong ties anthropic, natural, cultural elements, adaptive approach proves most effective. Concerning results underscore prevalence numerous stretches eroding low coastline, future projections indicating scenarios widespread retreat along southern Consequently, protective, management become imperative. analyses obtained serves valuable knowledge framework essential formulating plan coast, aligning authorities' orientations.
