Mindfulness and time perception: A systematic integrative review

Several
recent
studies
have
explored
the
relationships
between
mindfulness
and
time
perception,
an
area
of
research
that
has
become
increasingly
popular
in
last
10-15
years.
In
this
article,
we
present
a
systematic
integrative
review
evidence
on
subject.
We
also
integrate
field's
findings
into
conceptual
framework
which
considers
multifaceted
nature
both
mindfulness,
perception
research.
To
identify
relevant
literature,
searched
following
databases
using
keywords:
PsycINFO;
Medline;
EBSCO
Host
Psychology
Behavioral
Sciences
Collection;
Web
Science.
These
searches
were
performed

A
central
question
in
understanding
cognition
and
pathology-related
cognitive
changes
is
how
we
process
time.
However,
time
processing
difficulties
across
several
neurological
psychiatric
conditions
remain
seldom
investigated.
The
aim
of
this
review
to
develop
a
unifying
taxonomy
processing,
neuropsychological
perspective
on
temporal
difficulties.
Four
main
judgments
are
discussed:
duration
simultaneity
synchrony,
passage
time,
mental
travel.
We
present
an
integrated
theoretical
framework
timing
based
selected
patient
populations.
This
provides
new
mechanistic
insights
both
(a)
the
processes
involved
each
judgement,
(b)
pathologies.
By
identifying
underlying
transdiagnostic
time-processing
mechanisms,
opens
fruitful
avenues
for
future
research.

Across
species,
neurons
track
time
over
the
course
of
seconds
to
minutes,
which
may
feed
sense
passing.
Here,
we
asked
whether
neural
signatures
time-tracking
could
be
found
in
humans.
Participants
stayed
quietly
awake
for
a
few
minutes
while
being
recorded
with
magnetoencephalography
(MEG).
They
were
unaware
they
would
how
long
recording
lasted
(retrospective
time)
or
instructed
beforehand
estimate
it
will
last
(prospective
timing).
At
rest,
rhythmic
brain
activity
is
nonstationary
and
displays
bursts
alpha
range
(α:
7-14
Hz).
When
participants
not
attend
time,
relative
duration

linearly
predicted
individuals'
retrospective
estimates

quiet
wakefulness
lasted.
The

predictor
than

Abstract
Psychological
time
is
influenced
by
multiple
factors
such
as
arousal,
emotion,
attention
and
memory.
While
laboratory
observations
are
well
documented,
it
remains
unclear
whether
cognitive
effects
on
perception
replicate
in
real-life
settings.
This
study
exploits
a
set
of
data
collected
online
during
the
Covid-19
pandemic,
where
participants
completed
verbal
working
memory
(WM)
task
which
their
load
was
manipulated
using
parametric
n-back
(1-back,
3-back).
At
end
every
WM
trial,
estimated
duration
that
trial
rated
speed
at
they
perceived
passing.
In
this
within-participant
design,
we
initially
tested
amount
information
stored
affected
opposite
directions
depending
prospectively
(i.e.,
when
attend
to
time)
or
retrospectively
do
not
time).
Second,

hypothesis

Abstract
Timing
alterations
occur
in
Alzheimer’s
disease
(AD),
even
early
stages
(mild
cognitive
impairment,
MCI).
Moreover,
a
stage
named
subjective
decline
(SCD),
which
individuals
perceive
change
performance
not
revealed
by
neuropsychological
tests,
has
been
identified
as
preclinical
phase
of
AD.
However,
no
study
to
date
investigated
different
dimensions
time
processing
along
the
continuum
from
physiological
pathological
aging,
and
whether
timing
SCD.
Here
sample
participants
with
SCD,
MCI,
AD
healthy
controls
(HC)
performed
tasks
assessing
prospective
duration
estimation,
production,
reproduction,
implicit
temporal
learning
conditions
dependent
external
cues
(externally-cued
learning,
