Abstract Tracks and trackways of newborns, calves juveniles attributed to straight-tusked elephants were found in the MIS 5 site (Upper Pleistocene) known as Matalascañas Trampled Surface (MTS) at Huelva, SW Spain. Evidence a snapshot social behaviour, especially parental care, can be determined from concentration elephant tracks trackways, apparently contemporaneous converging small juvenile larger, presumably young adult female tracks. The size frequency enabled us infer body mass age distribution animals that crossed MTS. Comparisons MTS demographic with morphology fore- hind limbs extant fossil proboscideans shed light into reproductive ecology elephant, Palaeloxodon antiquus . interdune pond habitat appeared have been an important water food resource for matriarchal herds likely functioned habitat, only rare presence older males preservation this track record across paleosol surface, although heavily trampled by different animals, including Neanderthals, over short time frame, permitted exceptional view short-term intraspecific trophic interactions occurring Last Interglacial coastal habitat.
