The invasion of Ukraine by Russia started on 24 February 2022. armed conflict has been accompanied atmospheric and soil pollution, deterioration fresh water, the creation irreversible changes in ecosystems. This study focuses effects hostilities tropospheric pollution. It comprises an analysis spatiotemporal NO2 distribution over for period February–06 May 2022 from TROPOMI satellite instrument. We compared columns during first 72 days to values three pre-hostilities periods: pre-COVID-19, COVID-19 lockdown adaptive lockdown, differentiate restrictions active emissions Ukraine. used VIIRS instrument data fire its intensity confirm their influence level as well investigate extent which affect frequency. Additionally, we analyzed transborder regional air mass transport origin fires using HYSPLIT model version 5.2 supported it with near-surface weather charts. results indicate that have a direct impact pollution processes. Hostilities resulted unprecedented reduction economic activity, comparable pandemic correspondingly, reduced emission industrial areas, equals about 2–4 × 1015 molec cm−2, whereas concentration locally increased areas conflict. While detected temporal decline, negatively affected quality due significant increase frequency fires, especially conflict-related areas. Air case one-off strikes, tends be short-term phenomenon, but frequent attacks large military targets cause consequences local levels. During hostilities, linked bursts northern (Kyiv Zhytomyr regions), southern (Odesa, Kherson eastern (Donetsk region) parts Based data, was figured out forest Kyiv region Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, driven actions 19–23 March 2022, caused content 3 17.5 is most polluted Ukrainian cities period. As result, territories were located within 50 km observed at distance 200 downwind. forward trajectories simulation showed smoke-particle-included mass, related Zone extended Romania, Serbia, Kosovo, Albania towards Mediterranean Sea height 530 m. At 1.5–3 altitudes, parcels transported Poland countries Baltic region. height, reached Russian Federation h.

Abstract Wildfires are a significant source of organic aerosol during summer, with major impacts on air quality and climate. However, studies in Europe suggest surprisingly low (less than 10%) contribution biomass burning to average summertime fine particulate matter levels. In this study we combine field measurements atmospheric chemical transport modeling, demonstrate that the wildfires particle levels summer is seriously underestimated. Our work suggests corresponding has been underestimated by factor 4–7 were responsible for approximately half total OA July 2022. This discrepancy previous due rapid physicochemical transformation these emissions secondary oxidized an accompanying loss its fingerprints. These reactions lead regionally distributed background fraction health-related caused particles probably other continents. adverse health effects can occur hundreds or even thousands kilometers away from fires. We estimate wildfire 15–22% deaths exposure summer.
