The contributions of citizen science to SDG monitoring and reporting on marine plastics

Abstract
The
accumulation
of
plastic
litter
in
marine
environments
is
a
major
environmental
challenge
along
with
the
difficulties
their
measurement
because
massive
size
oceans
and
vast
circulation
litter,
which
being
addressed
as
part
United
Nations
(UN)
Sustainable
Development
Goals
(SDGs).
Citizen
science,
public
participation
scientific
research
knowledge
production,
represents
potential
source
data
for
SDG
monitoring
reporting
yet
there
has
been
no
evidence
its
use
to
date.
Here,
we
show
how
Ghana
become
first
country
integrate
existing
citizen
science
on
official
indicator
14.1.1b
years
2016–2020,
also
helped
bridge
local
collection
efforts
global
processes
policy
agendas
by
leveraging
framework.
results
have
used
Ghana’s
2022
Voluntary
National
Review
SDGs,
reported
UN
Global
Database,
well
helping
inform
relevant
policies
Ghana.
In
addition,
here,
present
pathway
that
can
be
adopted
government
authorities
other
countries
an
interest
following
similar
validation
process
this
potentially
others.

Planetary
health
has
emerged
as
a
transdisciplinary
field
to
capture
the
interdependencies
between
environmental
changes
and
human
health.
Nowhere
is
this
more
critical
than
in
low-
middle-income
country
(LMIC)
settings
where
majority
of
world’s
population
live.
These
are
undergoing
rapid
urbanisation
that
could
further
threaten
planetary
boundaries.
The
collaborative
societally
engaged
nature
means
participatory
dynamic
methods
needed
better
characterise
these
exposures.
Citizen
science
potential
enable
co-production
community-relevant
evidence
but
extent
which
being
deployed
for
LMIC
cities
not
been
synthesised.
To
synthesise
on
use
citizen
health-relevant
studies
urban
settings,
we
conducted
scoping
review,
following
Preferred
Reporting
Items
Systematic
reviews
Meta-Analyses
extension
Scoping
Reviews
Joanna
Briggs
Institute’s
stages
conducting
review.
Inclusion
criteria
included
empirical
LMICs,
with
focus
published
English
within
last
10
years.
Of
31
eligible
included,
focused
biodiversity,
illustrating
unharnessed
deploying
advance
understanding
broader
range
variables
cities.
Our
finding
predominance
Global
North
funding
highlights
need
greater
diversity
sources
shift
centre
gravity
decisions
optimise
alignment
research
priorities
contextual
realities
South.
inform
future
research,
propose
standardised
reporting
format
projects
guidelines
data
reliability
validity.
