Abstract The accumulation of plastic litter in marine environments is a major environmental challenge along with the difficulties their measurement because massive size oceans and vast circulation litter, which being addressed as part United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Citizen science, public participation scientific research knowledge production, represents potential source data for SDG monitoring reporting yet there has been no evidence its use to date. Here, we show how Ghana become first country integrate existing citizen science on official indicator 14.1.1b years 2016–2020, also helped bridge local collection efforts global processes policy agendas by leveraging framework. results have used Ghana’s 2022 Voluntary National Review SDGs, reported UN Global Database, well helping inform relevant policies Ghana. In addition, here, present pathway that can be adopted government authorities other countries an interest following similar validation process this potentially others.

Planetary health has emerged as a transdisciplinary field to capture the interdependencies between environmental changes and human health. Nowhere is this more critical than in low- middle-income country (LMIC) settings where majority of world’s population live. These are undergoing rapid urbanisation that could further threaten planetary boundaries. The collaborative societally engaged nature means participatory dynamic methods needed better characterise these exposures. Citizen science potential enable co-production community-relevant evidence but extent which being deployed for LMIC cities not been synthesised. To synthesise on use citizen health-relevant studies urban settings, we conducted scoping review, following Preferred Reporting Items Systematic reviews Meta-Analyses extension Scoping Reviews Joanna Briggs Institute’s stages conducting review.
