Aphantasia is a condition in which people are unable to experience visual imagery. Since imagery thought be key language processing, we hypothesized the of story would differ between individuals with aphantasia and controls. Forty-seven were compared fifty-one matched controls on their reading short general habits. Aphantasics less likely engaged with, interested in, absorbed story, experienced reduced emotional engagement sympathy for characters, Yet, aphantasics did not how much they liked or appreciated general, habits two groups also differ. Results have implications embodied theories language, suggesting may influence experienced, but it only route enjoyment.

Abstract There is a longstanding and widely held misconception about the relative remoteness of abstract concepts from concrete experiences. This review examines current evidence for external influences internal constraints on processing, representation, use concepts, like truth, friendship, number . We highlight theoretical benefit distinguishing between grounded embodied cognition then ask which roles do perception, action, language, social interaction play in acquiring, representing using concepts. Situation models—mental representations formed during comprehension—have evolved significantly beyond their origin in text-based research. models are now used accounts of comprehension across various media, including films, comics, and even real-world events. This article reviews four key developments research over the past 25 years: grounded cognition, multitext comprehension, visual media everyday event comprehension. In all these lines research, situation continue to play an important role.

Abstract Grounded cognition states that mental representations of concepts consist experiential aspects. For example, the concept “cup” consists sensorimotor experiences from interactions with cups. Typical modalities in which are grounded are: The system (including interoception), emotion, action, language, and social Here, we argue this list should be expanded to include physical invariants (unchanging features motion; e.g., gravity, momentum, friction). Research on reasoning consistently demonstrates represented as fundamentally other grounding substrates, therefore qualify. We assess several theories representation (simulation, conceptual metaphor, spaces, predictive processing) their positions invariants. find classic theories, simulation metaphor theory, have not considered invariants, while spaces processing have. conclude included into core mechanisms theory well suited do this. Furthermore, very promising also integrated future.

Abstract Interdisciplinary investigations of the human mind through cognitive sciences have identified a key role body in representing knowledge. After characterizing knowledge at grounded, embodied, and situated levels, number is analyzed from this hierarchical perspective. Lateralized cortical processing coarse versus fine detail as grounding substrate for population stereotype few/left, many/right, which then contributes to number‐related sensory motor biases embodied levels. Implications perspective education rehabilitation are discussed.

Abstract Vowels are associated with valence, so that words containing /i/ (as in English meet ) compared /o/ French rose typically judged to match positively valenced persons and objects. As yet, valence sound symbolism has been mainly observed for Indo-European languages. The present research extends this a comparison of Japanese-speaking German-speaking participants. Participants invented pseudo-words as names faces different emotional expressions (happy vs. neutral sad angry). For both participants, vowel usage depended on valence. I was used more positive (vs. other) expressions, whereas O U were less expressions. A but not In sum, associations rounded vowels) similar German Japanese, suggesting is language specific.

Research on iconicity or sound symbolism chronicles associations between aspects of word meaning and form. In valence symbolism, specifically, vowels were demonstrated to be associated with valence, so that the vowel /i/ (as in English sea) is judged fit positively valenced stimuli whereas /o/ German Boot) negatively stimuli. However, because previous findings based judgements name invention tasks, they may reflect deliberate strategies. The present research aims at demonstrating automaticity online language processing by means a speeded response task. A total 163 participants performed categorization task which requested classify one two simultaneously presented stimuli, pseudowords containing pictures positive negative emotional facial expressions. Thus, stimulus pairings could either congruent (/i/-words expressions; /o/-words expressions) incongruent expressions). We observed faster more accurate responses for over combinations (the simple effects significant but not symbolic congruency (vs. incongruency) an irrelevant facilitated responses, accords automatic process contributing indicates deeply engrained human cognitive system.
