GEOTRACES
is
an
international
program
that
has
benefited
from
contributions
by
investigators
in
35
nations.
The
mission
to
identify
processes
and
quantify
fluxes
control
the
distributions
of
key
trace
elements
isotopes
ocean
establish
sensitivity
these
changing
environmental
conditions.
This
perspective
first
summarizes
historical
motivation
for
program,
then
describes
selected
research
highlights,
focusing
on
recent
findings
related
iron.

The “Net” Impact of Hydrothermal Venting on Oceanic Elemental Inventories: Contributions to Plume Geochemistry from the International GEOTRACES Program

Hydrothermal
vents
serve
as
a
primary
interface
between
the
cold
deep
ocean
and
warm
oceanic
crust.
While
early
research
showed
that
seawater-rock
interactions
add
to
or
remove
elements
from
seawater
during
generation
of
hydrothermal
fluids,
consideration
these
fluid
fluxes
alone
does
not
relay
total
impact
systems
have
on
geochemistry.
In
addition,
plumes,
areas
where
fluids
mix
with
waters,
are
host
range
particle
precipitation
scavenging
reactions
further
modify
gross
define
“net”
inventories.
Here,
we
review
major
discoveries
made
by
international
GEOTRACES
program
regarding
geochemical
transformations
occurring
within
plumes.
We
classify
each
element
into
one
five
categories
based
its
behavior
in
spectrum
spanning
mass
balance
net
source
plume
sinks.
Overall,
celebrate
role
has
played
defining
extent
dynamics
geochemistry,
which
is
crucial

for
determining
global
impacts.

Abstract
Atmospheric
deposition
is
an
important
source
of
iron
(Fe)
and
perhaps
zinc
(Zn)
to
the
oceans.
We
present
total
water‐soluble
aerosol
Fe
Zn
isotopic
compositions,
size‐fractionated
enrichment
factors
from
North
Pacific
GEOTRACES
GP15
section
(Alaska‐Tahiti)
during
low
dust
season.
found
distinct
bulk
provinces
along
this
latitudinal
transect:
Asian
aerosols
(especially
crustal
dust)
dominate
at
higher
latitudes
(52–32°N)
while
American
heavier‐than‐crustal
wildfire
in
Equatorial
deployments
(20°N
20°S).
Soluble
was
isotopically
lighter‐than‐crustal
full
transect,
strongly
indicative
a
pervasive
anthropogenic
contribution
Pacific.
Comparison
global
model
corroborates
that
heavy
endmember
required
for
Fe,
attributed
pyroconvective
entrainment
soil
particles.
For
Zn,
entire
dominated
by
non‐crustal
sources,
reflected
light
compositions
(bulk:
−0.12
±
0.08‰
soluble:
−0.17
0.14‰).

Abstract
The
international
GEOTRACES
program
has
been
instrumental
in
demonstrating
how
marine
sediments
are
a
critical
source
of
dissolved
Fe
to
the
world's
oceans.
Here,
we
present
iron
(dFe)
from
North
Pacific
GP15
section,
which,
alongside
other
sediment‐source
tracers
(including
δ
56
Fe,
Mn,
228
Ra,
and
particulate
Fe),
allows
for
identification
dFe
provenance
three
distinct
depth
maxima
at
Alaskan
margin.
Two
these
(shelf
abyssal
depths)
local
sedimentary
origin.

the
transformational
findings
international
GEOTRACES
program
in
chemical
oceanography,
20
years
after
drafting
Science
Plan
2004
(GEOTRACES
Planning
Group,
2006).
With
section
cruise
phase
ending
soon,
and
a
planned
pivot
toward
smaller-scale
process
studies,
this
is
an
opportune
time
to
look
back
at
achievements
during
last
two
decades
highlight
some
advances
our
understanding
processes
that
determine
oceanic
distributions
trace
elements
isotopes
(TEIs).
