GEOTRACES is an international program that has benefited from contributions by investigators in 35 nations. The mission to identify processes and quantify fluxes control the distributions of key trace elements isotopes ocean establish sensitivity these changing environmental conditions. This perspective first summarizes historical motivation for program, then describes selected research highlights, focusing on recent findings related iron. patchy distribution iron indicates a short residence time, at low end range times estimated models. Iron removal must, therefore, be rapid. Recent results North Atlantic Ocean suggest formation particulate authigenic phases may factor contributing faster than previously thought. article also identifies several areas where advancements are expected through modeling synthesis efforts.

Hydrothermal vents serve as a primary interface between the cold deep ocean and warm oceanic crust. While early research showed that seawater-rock interactions add to or remove elements from seawater during generation of hydrothermal fluids, consideration these fluid fluxes alone does not relay total impact systems have on geochemistry. In addition, plumes, areas where fluids mix with waters, are host range particle precipitation scavenging reactions further modify gross define “net” inventories. Here, we review major discoveries made by international GEOTRACES program regarding geochemical transformations occurring within plumes. We classify each element into one five categories based its behavior in spectrum spanning mass balance net source plume sinks. Overall, celebrate role has played defining extent dynamics geochemistry, which is crucial lever for determining global impacts.

Abstract Atmospheric deposition is an important source of iron (Fe) and perhaps zinc (Zn) to the oceans. We present total water‐soluble aerosol Fe Zn isotopic compositions, size‐fractionated enrichment factors from North Pacific GEOTRACES GP15 section (Alaska‐Tahiti) during low dust season. found distinct bulk provinces along this latitudinal transect: Asian aerosols (especially crustal dust) dominate at higher latitudes (52–32°N) while American heavier‐than‐crustal wildfire in Equatorial deployments (20°N 20°S). Soluble was isotopically lighter‐than‐crustal full transect, strongly indicative a pervasive anthropogenic contribution Pacific. Comparison global model corroborates that heavy endmember required for Fe, attributed pyroconvective entrainment soil particles. For Zn, entire dominated by non‐crustal sources, reflected light compositions (bulk: −0.12 ± 0.08‰ soluble: −0.17 0.14‰).

Abstract The international GEOTRACES program has been instrumental in demonstrating how marine sediments are a critical source of dissolved Fe to the world's oceans. Here, we present iron (dFe) from North Pacific GP15 section, which, alongside other sediment‐source tracers (including δ 56 Fe, Mn, 228 Ra, and particulate Fe), allows for identification dFe provenance three distinct depth maxima at Alaskan margin. Two these (shelf abyssal depths) local sedimentary origin. third, mid‐depth maximum with an absence is advected signal that, based on tracer data Western transects circulation models, must be sources Asian margin, ∼5,000 km away. This study illustrates importance measuring diagnostic like radium when assigning margins as trace metal budgets.
