ABSTRACT The growth of cities is one the main direct and indirect factors responsible for loss native vegetation cover. Urbanization directly affects biological communities inhabiting forest remnants inserted in cities, compromising maintenance urban natural ecosystems. By understanding effects landscape transformation due to urbanization, we can have insights regarding distribution land uses that allow a proper This work assessed structure variables (forest cover, agricultural area, edge density, number patches) on dung beetle assemblages functional groups (i.e., diet resource removal strategy) sampled 38 sites located along an urban–rural gradient six belonging metropolitan area Manaus Central Amazonia. Losses cover were most determining factor, negatively affecting species richness, abundance, body size. increases agriculture affected while density positively their abundance. patches abundances—except dweller species—and size diet‐generalist species. These results demonstrate changes ecological diversity caused by urbanization are driven mostly loss, although configuration important study contributes how amount tropical affect taxonomic assemblages.

Venezuela’s diverse land ecosystems are grouped into four major regions (coast-islands, low plains, hills and mountains), ranging from sea level up to 4978 m. The Scarabaeinae (Scarabaeidae, Coleoptera) currently encompass 278 genera 6837 species worldwide, but poorly inventoried in Venezuela. We reviewed the literature material housed at entomological collection of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (CEMT), Cuiabá, Brazil, found 32 149 dung beetles as certainly present Twenty-four these are, far current knowledge goes, endemic country, while another 34 restricted Venezuela neighbouring countries Colombia, Trinidad Tobago, Guyana. Additionally, 36 deemed potential inhabitants whilst 14 others previously recorded part Venezuelan fauna here concluded not be actually there. Complete is listed for each genus species, information on type material, examined, worldwide distribution, records also presented.

Species relative abundance (SRA) is an essential attribute of biotic communities, which can provide accurate description community structure. However, the sampling method used may have a direct influence on SRA quantification, since use attractants (e.g., baits, light, and pheromones) introduce additional sources variation in trap performance. We tested how aided by baits affect data therefore alter derived metrics. our hypothesis dung beetles using from flight interception traps (FITs) as baseline to evaluate baited pitfall Our objective was assess effect bait attractiveness estimates assemblage metrics when sampled with human feces.Dung were at three terra firme primary forest sites Brazilian Amazon. To achieve objective, we (i) identified species variable levels attraction feces; (ii) assessed differences SRA; (iii) most commonly diversity (Shannon Simpson indices). less highly attracted used, because showed greater abundances within samples compared baseline. Assemblages tend show lower higher dominance than those unbaited FITs. findings suggest that for ecological questions focused abundance, lead inaccurate conclusions regarding Although beetles, same could be observed other insect taxa are also traps. highlight need further studies groups elucidate any potential effects baits.
