Memories are not perfect recordings of the past and can be subject to systematic biases. Memory distortions often caused by our experience what typically happens in a given situation. However, it is unclear whether memory for events biased knowledge that usually have predictable structure (a beginning, middle, an end). Using video clips everyday situations, we tested how interrupting at unexpected time points affects those ended. In four free recall experiments (1, 2, 4, 5), found just before salient piece action was completed, resulted false details about clip might We refer this as "event extension." On other hand, after one scene had ended new started, omissions true ending (Experiments 4 5). these effects were present, albeit attenuated, when testing shortly watching compared week later 5a 5b). The event extension effect present with recognition paradigm (Experiment 3). Overall, conclude people watch videos violate their expectations typical structure, they show bias if boundary, exhibiting or omission depending on where original interrupted. Schematic prior knowledge can scaffold the construction of event memories during perception and also provide structured cues to guide memory search retrieval. We measured activation story-specific schematic representations using fMRI while participants were presented with 16 stories then recalled each narratives, related these activations for specific story details. predicted that schema in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) would be correlated successful recall In keeping this prediction, an anterior mPFC region showed a significant correlation between at encoding subsequent behavioral performance; however, was not implicated representation More generally, our analyses revealed largely distinct brain networks retrieval which recall. These results new insight into when where support narrative memory.

How does the representation of naturalistic life events change with age? Here, we analyzed fMRI data from 414 children and adolescents (5-19 years) as they watched a narrative movie. In addition to changes in degree inter-subject correlation (ISC) age sensory medial parietal regions, used novel measure (between-group ISC) reveal age-related shifts responses across majority neocortex. Over course development, brain became more discretized into stable coherent shifted earlier time anticipate upcoming perceived event transitions, measured behaviorally an age-matched sample. However, hippocampal boundaries actually decreased age, suggesting shifting division labor between episodic encoding processes schematic representations ages 5 19.

Abstract Recent studies have shown that functional connectivity can be decomposed into its exact frame-wise contributions, revealing short-lived, infrequent, and high-amplitude time points referred to as “events.” Events contribute disproportionately the time-averaged pattern, improve identifiability brain-behavior associations, differences in their expression been linked endogenous hormonal fluctuations autism. Here, we explore characteristics of events while subjects watch movies. Using two independently-acquired imaging datasets which participants passively watched movies, find synchronize across individuals based on level synchronization, categorized three distinct classes: those at boundaries between during do not all. Apolipoprotein E ε4 is a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, and some apolipoprotein carriers show disease–related neuropathology many years before cognitive changes are apparent. Therefore, studying healthy genotyped individuals offers an opportunity to investigate the earliest in brain measures that may signal presence of disease-related processes. For example, subtle functional magnetic resonance imaging connectivity, particularly within default mode network, have been described when comparing ε3 carriers. Similarly, very mild impairments episodic memory also documented Here, we use naturalistic activity (movie watching), marker encoding (transient connectivity around so-called ‘event boundaries’), potential phenotype differences associated with genotype large sample adults. Abstract Event segmentation is a spontaneous part of perception, important for processing continuous information and organizing it into memory. Although neural behavioral event show degree inter-subject consistency, meaningful individual variability exists atop these shared patterns. Here we characterized differences in the location boundaries across four short movies that evoked variable interpretations. boundary alignment subjects followed posterior-to-anterior gradient was tightly correlated with rate segmentation: slower-segmenting regions integrate over longer time periods showed more locations. This relationship held irrespective stimulus, but to which particular were versus idiosyncratic depended on certain aspects movie content. Furthermore, this behaviorally significant similarity locations during movie-watching predicted how ultimately remembered appraised. In particular, identified subset are both aligned encoding predictive stimulus interpretation, suggesting may be mechanism by narratives generate memories appraisals stimuli.
