Migration is a widely observed phenomenon supported by morphological, physiological and behavioural traits that vary with season sex in many species. Recently, the genetic components underpinning migration marmalade hoverfly (Diptera: Syrphidae) have been unpacked through detection of differentially expressed genes between migrant non-migrant females. Males also migrate, but changing ratios during autumn migration, from around 50% female northern Europe to 90% southern Europe, suggests males are poor long-distance fliers. To elucidate mechanisms this difference, we performed transcriptomic characterization actively migrating females males. Both sexes show similar adaptations including hyperphagia starvation resistance, display higher tolerance cold, lower wing loading values greater flight capacity. In addition, modulate expression involved immunity, hypoxia longevity while suppressing hormonal pathways maintaining reproductive diapause. These contribute success migrants underlie diminishing pool males, influencing population dynamics across huge geographic areas whole migratory overwintering period.

ABSTRACT Insect migrants are hugely abundant, with recent studies identifying the megadiverse order Diptera as major component of many migratory assemblages. Despite this, their behaviour has been widely overlooked in favour more ‘charismatic’ migrant insects such butterflies, dragonflies, and moths. Herein we review available literature on dipteran migration to determine its prevalence, identify key routes elucidate areas that may prove fruitful for future research. Using 13 lines evidence behaviour, determined species from 60 out 130 families show migration, Syrphidae fulfilling 12 these criteria, followed by Tephritidae 10. By contrast, 22 met just two criteria or fewer, underlining need research into characteristics groups. In total, 592 were identified potentially migratory, making them most speciose group insect yet described. only 0.5% found be migrants, a figure rising 3% Syrphidae, percentage mirrored other taxa noctuid moths, bats. Research was biased locations Europe (49% publications) while vast regions remain understudied, our flyways used across all biogeographic realms. Finally, highlight an unsurpassed level ecological diversity within including roles huge economic value. Overall, this highlights how little is known about vital health global ecosystems.

Many insect migrants rely on favorable seasonal winds to carry out long-range latitudinal migrations. In East China, the annual advance and retreat of Asian summer monsoon produces ideal conditions for range expansion contraction many migratory crop pests. However, climate-induced changes in strength, timing, location are impacting wind systems which may, turn, affect migration patterns. We investigated these questions rice leafroller (RLR) moth, a severe pest that annually invades Lower Yangtze River Valley (LYRV) China from winter-breeding areas further south. Using 24-y dataset RLR population dynamics 31 monitoring stations across Southeast we impact regimes fall patterns pest. Historically, emigrated LYRV South favorably directed produced by at end outbreak season (from mid-August onward). show recent 12-y period, prevailing late-season remain northward longer than previously, preventing locally moths emigrating southward. Additionally, now facilitate mass immigrations into LYRV, creating an ecological trap, as immigrants do not have time produce another generation. As consequence changing patterns, pressure is declining, result becoming riskier strategy. Such implications windborne migrants, ecosystem functioning, management strategies.

Insects are capable of extraordinary feats long-distance movement that have profound impacts on the function terrestrial ecosystems. The ability to undertake these movements arose multiple times through evolution a suite traits make up migratory syndrome, however underlying genetic pathways involved remain poorly understood. Migratory hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae) an emerging model group for studies migration. They seasonal in huge numbers across large parts globe and important pollinators, biological control agents decomposers. Here, we assembled high-quality draft genome marmalade hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus). We leveraged this genomic resource genome-wide transcriptomic comparison actively migrating Episyrphus, captured from high mountain pass as they flew south overwinter, with transcriptomes summer forms which were non-migratory. identified 1543 genes very strong evidence differential expression. Interrogation gene set reveals remarkable range roles metabolism, muscle structure function, hormonal regulation, immunity, stress resistance, flight feeding behaviour, longevity, reproductive diapause sensory perception. These features migrant phenotype arisen by integration modification such insulin signalling JAK/SAT those leading octopamine production fuelling boost capabilities. Migratory insects are key players in ecosystem functioning and services, but their spatiotemporal distributions typically poorly known. Ecological niche modeling (ENM) may be used to predict species seasonal distributions, the resulting hypotheses should eventually validated by field data. The painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) performs multigenerational migrations between Europe Africa has become a model for insect movement ecology. While annual migration cycle of this is well understood northernmost Africa, it still unknown where most individuals spend winter. Through ENM, we previously predicted suitable breeding grounds subhumid regions near tropics November February. The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) invaded Myanmar and China in 2018 greatly impacted agricultural production ecosystem balance these areas. FAW is a migratory insect, but its seasonal migration pattern between the two countries has been largely unknown. From 2019 to 2021, we monitored of China-Myanmar border area using searchlight trap, assessed reproductive development status female migrants traced routes by trajectory simulation.FAW moths were trapped trap Lancang County (Yunnan, China) all year, with obvious differences number caught. There small-scale persistent trapping peaks spring summer, autumn; only small winter. Examination ovaries collected different seasons showed that most females had matured, indicating migrating did not take off from local area. In simulation, mainly migrated Southwest summer back autumn. Our findings indicate migrates according monsoon circulation, which will help guide cross-border regional monitoring management strategies against this pest. © 2022 Society Chemical Industry.

Abstract Hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) are a group of insects containing many migratory species that provide critical ecosystem services including pollination, decomposition and biological control. Their behaviour remains largely overlooked unacknowledged, but an influx contemporary research is beginning to shift this. The goal this review summarise synthesise the past 150+ years global hover fly migration from over 50 papers in multiple languages. Here, we comprehensive evidence for through lens methodologies used studying these phenomena, mechanisms associated ecological economic impacts. We also include inventory all recognised discuss taxonomic patterns. In total, compiled accounts 46 considered migratory, most which were sourced Europe. Recent reports, however, have described North America, Asia, Middle East Australia. Approximately 70% subfamily Syrphinae, important control agents. has substantial impacts on may be linked long‐distance gene flow angiosperms via pollen transportation. These likely redistributing at continental scale annual basis, major repercussions management crop pests such as aphids. sensitivity anthropogenic not well known, shifting climatic conditions, pollution increased habitat fragmentation impactful should further explored.
