The
silky
shark,
Carcharhinus
falciformis
,
is
a
cosmopolitan
species
commonly
caught
as
bycatch
for
longline
fisheries.
However,
the
genetic
stock
structure
Indo-Pacific
Ocean
not
well-defined
yet.
Here,
we
used
eight
microsatellite
loci
to
examine
and
effective
population
size
of
307
sharks
across
5
sampling
locations.

Large-bodied
pelagic
sharks
are
key
regulators

oceanic
ecosystem

shark

predator,
has
undergone
dramatic
population
reductions
and
is
now
Endangered
(IUCN

List),
with
Atlantic
Ocean
in
particular
assessed
fishery
managers
as
overfished
need
urgent,
improved
management
attention.
Genomic-scale
assessments
for
this
apex
predator
species
have
not
been
previously
available
to
inform
planning;
thus,
we
investigated
genetics
across

Abstract
Understanding
the
population
dynamics
of
highly
mobile,
widely
distributed,
oceanic
sharks,
many
which
are
overexploited,
is
necessary
to
aid
their
conservation
management.
We
investigated
global
genomics
tiger
sharks
(Galeocerdo
cuvier),
a
circumglobally
apex
predator
displaying
remarkable
behavioral
versatility
in
its
diet,
habitat
use
(near
coastal,
coral
reef,
pelagic),
and
individual
movement
patterns
(spatially
resident
long-distance
migrations).
genotyped
242
from
10
globally
distributed
locations
at
more
than
2000
single
nucleotide
polymorphisms.
Although
this
species
often
conducts
massive
distance
migrations,
data
show
strong
genetic
differentiation
both
neutral
(FST
=
0.125–0.144)
candidate
outlier

between
western
Atlantic
Indo-Pacific
suggesting
potential
for
adaptation

Abstract
The
silky
shark
is
the
second
most
common
in
Southeast
Asia's
dried
fin
markets
and
managed
Atlantic
Ocean
by
International
Commission
for
Conservation
of
Tuna
(ICCAT)
three
Indo‐Pacific
regional
fisheries
management
organizations
(RMFOs).
