The silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis , is a cosmopolitan species commonly caught as bycatch for longline fisheries. However, the genetic stock structure Indo-Pacific Ocean not well-defined yet. Here, we used eight microsatellite loci to examine and effective population size of 307 sharks across 5 sampling locations. A major break was found between Aceh remaining locations (F ST = 0.0505–0.0828, p 0.001). Indian displayed slightly lower estimate (Ne) compared Pacific Ocean, potentially due higher fishing pressure in region. lowest Ne (Ne 2.3), suggesting it might be small endemic population. These findings offer valuable information conservation management shark. We suggest that around waters constitutes distinct should managed independently. Further investigations into migratory movement patterns are needed define boundaries different stocks, ensuring shark

Among the main measures adopted to reduce anthropogenic impacts on elasmobranch communities, understanding ecology of deep-sea sharks is paramount importance, especially for potentially vulnerable species highly represented in bycatch composition commercial fisheries such as blackmouth catshark Galeus melastomus . In present work, we unravelled first indication population genetic structure G. by using a novel and effective panel nuclear, polymorphic DNA markers compared our results with previous findings supporting high connectivity at large spatial scales. Given lack species-specific nuclear markers, total 129 microsatellite loci (Simple Sequence Repeats, SSRs) were cross-amplified specimens collected eight geographically distant areas Mediterranean Sea North-eastern Atlantic Ocean. Our findings suggest marine cool‐temperate bioregions Southern Hemisphere may more complex biogeographic histories than terrestrial taxa and/or coastal northern, formerly glaciated regions.

Defining demographically independent units and understanding patterns of gene flow between them is essential for managing conserving exploited populations. The critically endangered scalloped hammerhead shark, Sphyrna lewini , a coastal semi-oceanic species found worldwide in tropical subtropical waters. Pregnant females give birth shallow estuarine habitats that serve as nursery grounds neonates small juveniles, whereas adults move offshore become highly migratory. We evaluated the population structure connectivity S . areas one oceanic island (Cocos Island) across Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) using both sequences mitochondrial DNA control region (mtCR) 9 nuclear-encoded microsatellite loci. mtCR defined two genetically discrete groups: Mexican another central-southern (Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia). Overall, data showed low levels haplotype diversity ranging from 0.000 to 0.608, while nucleotide ranged 0.0015. More fine-grade was detected loci where Guatemala, Panama differed significantly. Relatedness analysis revealed individuals within were more closely related than expected by chance, suggesting may exhibit reproductive philopatric behaviour ETP. Findings at least different management units, evidence call intensive conservation actions this threatened

Fin whales Balaenoptera physalus were hunted unsustainably across the globe in 19th and 20th centuries, leading to vast reductions population size. Whaling catch records indicate importance of Southern Ocean for this species; approximately 730,000 fin harvested during century Hemisphere (SH) alone, 94% which at high latitudes. Genetic samples from contemporary can provide a window past size changes, but challenges sampling remote Antarctic waters limit availability data. Here, we take advantage historical form bones baleen available ex-whaling stations museums assess pre-whaling diversity once abundant species. Our data, both independently when combined with literature, suggest SHFWs are highly diverse may represent single panmictic that is genetically differentiated Northern populations. Abstract The Hawaiian Archipelago has served as a natural laboratory to assess genetic connectivity patterns across broad spectrum of taxonomic and ecological diversity. Almost all these studies were based on few targeted loci, but technologies now allow us population structure with genomic coverage greater resolution. Here, we provide SNP-based analysis for an endemic surgeonfish, Acanthurus triostegus sandvicensis (manini) the adjacent Johnston Atoll ( N = 461). Based 3649 SNPs, manini showed in main Islands, homogeneity most northwestern extent archipelago (overall F ST 0.033, P < 0.001). Net migration occurred from into Hawai‘i, providing further support being pathway dispersal (or colonization) Hawai′i. These results highlight higher efficacy sequencing characterize fine-scale relative loci approach and, moving forward, may invoke reassessment past genomics framework.

Tarakihi ( Nemadactylus macropterus ) is an important fishery species with widespread distribution around New Zealand and off the southern coasts of Australia. However, little known about whether populations are locally adapted or genetically structured. To address this, we conducted whole-genome resequencing 175 tarakihi from Tasmania (Australia) to obtain a dataset 7.5 million genome-wide high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Variant filtering, F ST -outlier analysis, redundancy analysis (RDA) were used evaluate population structure, adaptive locus-environment associations. A weak but significant level neutral genetic differentiation was found between = 0.0054–0.0073, P ≤ 0.05), supporting existence at least two separate reproductive stocks. No clustering detected among (Φ < 0.001, 0.77). Many marine animals have a biphasic life cycle in which demersal adults spawn pelagic larvae with high dispersal potential. An understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns larval is critical for describing connectivity local retention. Existing tools oceanography, genetics, ecology can each reveal only part overall pattern dispersal. We combined insights from coupled physical-biological model, parentage analyses, field surveys to span pathways, endpoints, recruitment convict surgeonfish Acanthurus triostegus .
