Exposure is key to message effects. No effects can ensue if a health, political, or commercial not noticed. Yet, existing research in communication, advertising, and related disciplines often measures ‘opportunities for exposure’ at an aggregate level, whereas knowing whether recipients were ‘actually exposed’ requires micro-level approach. Micro-level research, on the other hand, focuses processing retention, takes place under highly controlled laboratory conditions with forced exposure, largely ignores how attend selectively messages more natural conditions. Eye-tracking enables us assess actual but its previous applications restricted screen-based reading paradigms lacking ecological validity field studies that suffer from limited experimental control. Our solution measure eye-tracking within immersive VR environment creates delivery reception context. Specifically, we simulate car ride down highway alongside which billboards are placed. The headset (HP Omnicept Pro) provides interactive 3D view of holds seamlessly integrated binocular eye tracker records drivers’ gaze detects all fixations billboards. This allows quantify nexus between exposure rigorously, link our subsequent memory, i.e., remembered, forgotten, even encoded. An empirical study shows incidental memory differs based participants’ behavior while passing further manipulation attentional demands directly impacts memory. We discuss large potential this paradigm realistic communication environments equally promising new media contexts (e.g., Metaverse).

Eye-tracking plays a crucial role in the development of virtual reality devices, neuroscience research, and psychology. Despite its significance numerous applications, achieving an accurate, robust, fast eye-tracking solution remains considerable challenge for current state-of-the-art methods. While existing reflection-based techniques (e.g., "glint tracking") are considered to be very their performance is limited by reliance on sparse 3D surface data acquired solely from cornea surface. In this paper, we rethink way how specular reflections can used eye tracking: We propose method accurate evaluation gaze direction that exploits teachings single-shot phase-measuring-deflectometry. contrast methods, our acquires dense information both sclera within only one single camera frame (single-shot). Humans race drones faster than algorithms, despite being limited to a fixed camera angle, body rate control, and response latencies in the order of hundreds milliseconds. A better understanding ability human pilots selecting appropriate motor commands from highly dynamic visual information may provide key insights for solving current challenges vision-based autonomous navigation. This paper investigates relationship between eye movements, control behavior, flight performance drone racing task. We collected multimodal dataset 21 experienced using realistic simulator, also used recruit professional pilots. Our results show task-specific improvements over time. In particular, we found that gaze tracks future waypoints (i.e., gates), with first fixations occurring on average 1.5 seconds 16 meters before reaching gate. Moreover, consistently looked at inside path lateral left right turns) vertical maneuvers ascending descending). Finally, strong correlation movements commanded direction quadrotor flight, an visual-motor latency 220 ms. These highlight importance coordinated human-piloted racing. make our publicly available.

Abstract How do we construct a sense of place in real-world environment? Real-world environments are actively explored via saccades, head turns, and body movements. Yet, little is known about how humans process scene information during active viewing conditions. Here, exploited recent developments virtual reality (VR) in-headset eye-tracking to test the impact vs. passive conditions on gaze behavior while participants novel, real-world, 360° scenes. In one condition, photospheres from first-person perspective self-directed motion (saccades turns). another were passively displayed they head-restricted. We found that, relative viewers, viewers increased attention semantically meaningful regions, suggesting more exploratory, information-seeking behavior. also observed signatures exploratory eye movements, such as quicker, entropic fixations compared with These results show that influences every aspect behavior, way move our eyes what choose attend to. Moreover, these offer key benchmark measurements 360°, naturalistic environments.
