Abstract Music comprises a diverse category of cognitive phenomena that likely represent both the effects psychological adaptations are specific to music (e.g., rhythmic entrainment) and for non-musical functions auditory scene analysis). How did evolve? Here, we show prevailing views on evolution – is byproduct other evolved faculties, social bonding, or signal mate quality incomplete wrong. We argue instead as credible in at least two contexts: coalitional interactions infant care. Specifically, propose (1) production reception coordinated, entrained displays co-evolved system credibly signaling coalition strength, size, coordination ability; (2) infant-directed song parental attention secondarily altricial infants. These proposals, supported by interdisciplinary evidence, suggest basic features music, such melody rhythm, result from proper domain human music. The provide foundation cultural its actual domain, yielding diversity musical forms behaviors found worldwide.

The spermatozoon is a highly differentiated and polarized cell, with two main structures: the head, containing haploid nucleus acrosomal exocytotic granule, flagellum, which generates energy propels cell; both structures are connected by neck. sperm’s aim to participate in fertilization, thus activating development. Despite this common bauplan function, there an enormous diversity structure performance of sperm cells. For example, mammalian spermatozoa may exhibit several head patterns overall lengths ranging from ∼30 350 µm. Mechanisms transport female tract, preparation for recognition interaction oocyte also show considerable variation. There has been much interest understanding origin diversity, evolutionary terms relation mechanisms underlying differentiation testis. Here, relationships between function examined at levels: first, analyzing selective forces that drive changes physiology understand adaptive values variation impact on male reproductive success second, examining cellular molecular formation testis explain how can give rise such wide array forms functions.

In contrast to sexual selection on traits that affect interactions between the sexes before mating, little theoretical research has focused coevolution of postmating via cryptic female choice (when females bias fertilization toward specific males). We used simulation models ask (a) whether and, if so, how nondirectional (female-by-male in success) causes deviations from focus exclusively male-mediated processes, and (b) risk sperm competition, strength choice, tradeoffs number interact influence coevolutionary dynamics traits. found incorporating can result males investing much less their ejaculates than predicted by with competition only. also resulted evolution genetic correlations traits, even when was weak, low. This suggests may be important systems low multiple mating. These increased as increased. When high, extreme codivergence preference occurred trait traded off number. male lagged behind traits; this lag decreased increasing competition. Overall, our results suggest deserves more attention theoretically driving ways just beginning explored.

Sexual selection plays a crucial role in modern evolutionary theory, offering valuable insight into patterns and species diversity. Recently, comprehensive definition of sexual has been proposed, defining it as any that arises from fitness differences associated with nonrandom success the competition for access to gametes fertilization. Previous research on discrete traits demonstrated non-random mating can be effectively quantified using Jeffreys (or symmetrized Kullback-Leibler) divergence, capturing information acquired through influenced by mutual propensities instead random occurrences. This novel theoretical framework allows detecting assessing strength assortative mating. In this study, we aim achieve two primary objectives. Firstly, demonstrate seamless alignment previous development, rooted theory propensity, aforementioned selection. Secondly, extend encompass quantitative traits. Our findings reveal measuring gain relative pattern. The connection indices classical measures is established. Additionally, if are normally distributed, measure underlying function square correlation coefficient, taking values within non-negative real number set [0, +∞). It worth noting same divergence captures both interesting provides common context help simplify study patterns.

In birds with extrapair mating, older males usually have higher fertilization success than younger males. Two hypotheses can potentially explain this pattern: 1) females prefer older, and often more ornamented males, or 2) invest in reproduction fertility Here we studied factors associated age-related male a population of barn swallows Hirundo rustica Canada. Abstract The interplay between morphological (structures) and behavioral (acts) signals in contest assessment is still poorly understood. Non-iridescent structural plumage reflectance is a sexually selected indicator of individual quality in several bird species. However, the basis differences remains unclear. In particular, dominant periodicity quasi-ordered feather barb nanostructure key importance colour generation, but no study has successfully traced back parameters, and particularly hue, to nanostructural periodicity, although this would be deciphering information content variation. We used matrix small-angle X-ray scattering measurements intact, stacked samples from blue tit crown estimate sex-dependence variation its effects on light reflectance.
