The application of mulch films for preserving soil moisture and preventing weed growth has been a part agricultural practice decades. Different materials have used as films, but polyethylene plastic considered most effective due to its excellent mechanical strength, low cost ability act barrier sunlight water. However, use carries risk pollution health hazards, hence new laws passed replace it completely with other over the next few years. Research find out about biodegradable polymers this purpose gained impetus in past years, driven by regulations United Nations Organization’s Sustainable Development Goals. primary requisite these is biodegradability under natural climatic conditions without production any toxic residual compounds. Therefore, developed from fossil fuels, microorganisms, animals plants are viable options using mulching material. solution not simple since each polymer different properties compromise be made terms film. This review discusses history materials, gradual evolution choice process biodegradation regarding material used, types that can explored potential future prospects area.

Abstract Microplastic pollution is becoming a major issue for human health due to the recent discovery of microplastics in most ecosystems. Here, we review sources, formation, occurrence, toxicity and remediation methods microplastics. We distinguish ocean-based land-based sources Microplastics have been found biological samples such as faeces, sputum, saliva, blood placenta. Cancer, intestinal, pulmonary, cardiovascular, infectious inflammatory diseases are induced or mediated by exposure during pregnancy maternal period also discussed. Remediation include coagulation, membrane bioreactors, sand filtration, adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, electrocoagulation magnetic separation. Control strategies comprise reducing plastic usage, behavioural change, using biodegradable plastics. Global production has risen dramatically over past 70 years reach 359 million tonnes. China world's top producer, contributing 17.5% global production, while Turkey generates waste Mediterranean region, at 144 tonnes per day. 75% marine waste, with responsible 80–90% pollution, account only 10–20%. induce toxic effects on humans animals, cytotoxicity, immune response, oxidative stress, barrier attributes, genotoxicity, even minimal dosages 10 μg/mL. Ingestion animals results alterations gastrointestinal tract physiology, system depression, differential gene expression, growth inhibition. Furthermore, bioaccumulation tissues aquatic organisms can adverse ecosystem, potential transmission birds. Changing individual behaviours governmental actions, implementing bans, taxes, pricing carrier bags, significantly reduced consumption 8–85% various countries worldwide. The microplastic minimisation approach follows an upside-down pyramid, starting prevention, followed reducing, reusing, recycling, recovering, ending disposal least preferable option.

Plastics are ubiquitous in our society. They phones, clothes, bottles, and cars. Yet having improved lives considerably, they now threaten environment health. The associated carbon emissions persistency of plastics challenge the fragile balance many ecosystems. One solution is using biodegradable plastics. Ideally, such easily assimilated by microorganisms disappear from environment. This can help reduce problems climate change, microplastics, littering. However, still only a tiny portion global market require further efforts research commercialization. Here, critical overview state art given. Using material flow analysis, challenges plastic highlighted, with it large potential environmental socio-economic impact plastics, government policies, standards certifications, physico-chemical properties, analytical techniques covered. Environmental concerns over waste plastics' effect on the environment are leading to creation of biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics may serve as a promising approach manage issue environmental accumulation plastic in ocean and soil. type polymers that can be degraded by microorganisms into small molecules (e.g., H2O, CO2, CH4). However, there misconceptions surrounding For example, term "biodegradable" product labeling misconstrued public imply will degrade under any conditions. Such misleading information leads consumer encouragement excessive consumption certain goods increased littering products labeled "biodegradable". This review not only provides comprehensive overview state-of-the-art but also clarifies definitions various terms associated with plastics, including oxo-degradable enzyme-mediated biodegradation agents. Analytical techniques standard test methods evaluate biodegradability polymeric materials alignment international standards summarized. The summarizes properties industrial applications previously developed then discusses how biomass-derived monomers create new types utilizing their unique chemical from oxygen-containing functional groups. terminology methodologies covered paper provide perspective directions for design possess advanced performance practical benefits.

For each kilogram of food protein wasted, between 15 and 750 kg CO2 end up in the atmosphere. With this alarming carbon footprint, waste not only contributes to climate change but also significantly impacts other environmental boundaries, such as nitrogen phosphorus cycles, global freshwater use, land composition, chemical pollution, biodiversity loss. This contrasts sharply with both high nutritional value proteins, well their unique physical versatility, which enable use new materials innovative technologies. In review, we discuss how can be efficiently valorized by reintroduction into chain supply a template for development sustainable technologies allowing it exit food-value chain, thus alleviating some most urgent challenges.
