Abstract Gardens have emerged as a key habitat resource for pollinators in cities, but more research is needed to determine the optimal garden characteristics maximising native pollinator diversity. Syrphid flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) are abundant generalist fly that received less study than other urban gardens. In this study, we investigated whether flowering plant diversity and presence of plants were related syrphid abundance street Over two-month period, sampled 12 small public gardens residential area (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) explore correlations between assemblages. reflected relative scarcity our system, such with flowers present ranged from 10 60% cover. Although richness varied among gardens, neither floral nor was correlated or Beyond origin, may be important visitation at scale. A better understanding role complex factors shaping assemblages will offer valuable insights improvement conservation strategies.

Abstract Invertebrates comprise the most diversified animal group on Earth. Due to their long evolutionary history and small size, invertebrates occupy a remarkable range of ecological niches, play an important role as “ecosystem engineers” by structuring networks mutualistic antagonistic interactions in almost all terrestrial ecosystems. Urban forests provide critical ecosystem services humans, and, other systems, are central maintaining functioning urban forests. Identifying can help elucidate importance practitioners public, not only preserve biodiversity environments, but also make public aware functional healthy greenspaces. In this review, we examine multiple roles that contribute service provisioning, including pollination, predation, herbivory, seed microorganism dispersal organic matter decomposition, those lead disservices, primarily from health perspective, e.g., transmission invertebrate-borne diseases. We then identify number filters structure forest invertebrate communities, such changes habitat structure, increased landscape imperviousness, microclimatic pollution. discuss complexity ways respond urbanisation, acclimation, local extinction evolution. Finally, present management recommendations support conserve viable diverse populations into future.

Urban areas often host exotic plant species, whether managed or spontaneous. These plants are suspected of affecting pollinator diversity and the structure pollination networks. However, in dense cityscapes, also provide additional flower resources during periods scarcity, consequences for seasonal dynamics networks still need to be investigated. For two consecutive years, we monitored monthly plant-pollinator 12 green spaces Paris, France. We focused on variations availability attractiveness resources, comparing native at both species community levels. considered their respective contributions network properties over time (specialization nestedness). Exotic provided more abundant diverse than plants, especially from late summer on. received visits attracted level; certain times year level as well. were involved generalist interactions, increasingly so seasons. In addition, they contributed nestedness plants. results show that major components interactions a urban landscape, even though less attractive natives. They constitute core increase can participate overall stability network. most seldom visited by insects. Pollinator communities may benefit including when managing spaces.

Abstract In urban areas, diverse and complex habitats for biodiversity are often lacking. This lack of diversity not only compromises essential ecological processes, such as pollination nutrient cycling, but also diminishes the resilience ecosystems to pests diseases. To enhance biodiversity, a possible solution is integrate shrubs alongside trees, thereby increasing overall amount vegetation, structural complexity associated resource diversity. Here, using common garden experiment involving variety trees planted alone in combination, we evaluate how canopy-associated invertebrate assemblages influenced by vegetation type. particular, test whether presence shrubs, or with results increased abundance taxonomic richness invertebrates, compared on their own. We found that specific functional groups (e.g., herbivores, pollinators, detritivores), was higher when were combination (relative own). Our suggest planting shrub tree species wide dense crowns can increase group communities. Overall, our findings indicate planning would benefit from incorporating maximise abundance, function landscapes.

Abstract Cities provide opportunities for biodiversity conservation through the design of urban greenspaces as wildlife habitat. Urban greenspaces are recognized as a benefit to pollinator conservation. Selective planting of attractive flowering plants can improve the conservation value urban greenspaces. However, functional traits that moderate preference merits further study. We analyzed 98 ornamental and spontaneous plant species for ten categories floral across twelve parks or campus in Wuhan, megacity located central China. Our results revealed that: (1) Plant vary enormously their visitation rate. (2) For Lepidoptera, number individuals plot was lower disk/bowl-shaped flowers than other flower shapes, it negatively corelated with corolla tube length. The Diptera higher white, red/pink yellow/orange blue/violet flowers. (3) Honeybees preferred exotic annual/biennial herbaceous species, disk/bowl flag Solitary bees horizontal, lip most frequently visited upward-facing, heads Lepidoptera funnel-shaped heads. Blue/violet diverse orientation were by groups. recommend native woody (Nandina domestica, Thymus quinquecostatus, Lagerstroemia indica, Tamarix austromongolica) (Centaurea cyanus, Borago officinalis, Portulaca grandiflora, Echinacea purpurea) support multiple As preferences differ among pollinators, increasing richness is conducive promote overall diversity.
