Azulene,
a
blue
structural
isomer
of
naphthalene,
is
introduced
as
the
backbone
for
new
family
Pd(II)-based
self-assemblies.
Three
organic
ligands,
equipped
with
varying
donor
groups,
produce
three
[Pd2L4]
cages
different
cavity
dimensions.
Unexpectedly,
addition
disulfonate
guests
to
smallest
lantern-shaped
cage
(featuring
pyridine
donors)
led
rapid
and
quantitative
transformation
distorted-tetrahedral
[Pd4L8]
species.
On
contrary,
formed
from
ligands
isoquinoline
donors
either
just
encapsulated
or
showed
no
interaction.
The
tetrahedral
species
could
be
fully
reverted
back
its
original
topology
by
capturing
guest
another,
stronger
binding
[Pd2L'4]
coordination
cage,
narcissistically
self-sorting

cage.

Abstract
Bio-inspired
self-assembly
is
invaluable
to
create
well-defined
giant
structures
from
small
molecular
units.
Owing
a
large
entropy
loss
in
the
process,
highly
symmetric
are
typically
obtained
as
thermodynamic
products
while
formation
of
low
assemblies
still
challenging.
In
this
study,
we
report
symmetry-breaking
defined
C
1
-symmetric
supramolecular
structure
an
O
h
hydrogen-bonded
resorcin[4]arene
capsule
and
2
cationic
bis-cyclometalated
Ir
complexes,
carrying
sterically
demanding
tertiary
butyl
(
t
Bu)
groups,
on
basis
synergistic
effects
weak
binding
forces.
The
flexible
framework
shows
structural
change
upon

form
distorted
hexameric
capsule,

asymmetric

Stemming
from
early
seminal
notions
of
molecular
recognition
and
encapsulation,
three-dimensional,
cavity-containing
capsular
compounds
assemblies
have
attracted
intense
interest
due
to
the
ability
modulate
chemical
physical
properties

encapsulated
within
these
confined
spaces
compared
bulk
environments.
With
such
a
diverse
range
covalent
motifs
non-covalent
(supramolecular)
interactions
available
assemble
building
blocks,
an
incredibly
wide-range
capsular-type
architectures

developed.
Furthermore,
synthetic
tunability
internal
environments
gives
chemists
opportunity
engineer
systems
for
uses
in
sensing,
sequestration,
catalysis

molecules,

few.
In
this
tutorial
review,
overview
is
provided
into
design
principles,
synthesis,
characterisation,
structural
facets

porous
organic
supramolecular
capsules,

mechanically
interlocked
molecules.

recent

each
system
are

highlighting
their

Abstract
Controlling
supramolecular
systems
between
different
functional
forms
by
utilizing
acids/bases
as
stimuli
is
a
formidable
challenge,
especially
where
labile
coordination
bonds
are
involved.
A
pair
of
acid/base
responsive,
interconvertible
1,5‐enedione/pyrylium
based
Pd
2
L
4
‐type
cages
prepared
that
exhibit
differential
guest
binding
abilities
towards
disulfonates
varied
sizes.
three‐state
switch
has
been
achieved,
(i)
weakly
coordinating
base
induced
cage‐to‐cage
transformation
in
the
first
step,
(ii)
strongly
triggered
cage
disassembly
second
and
(iii)
third
step
shows
acid(strong)
promoted
generation
initial
cage,
thereby
completing
cycle.
To
our
surprise,
specific
disulfonate
facilitated
transformations
inducing
strain
on
assembly
opening
pyrylium
rings
cage.
Through
competitive
study,
we
demonstrated
superior
capability
octacationic
pyrylium‐based
over
similar‐sized
tetracationic

results

reliable
approach
to
reversibly
modulate
properties

self‐assembled
