It is widely acknowledged that in most species sexual selection continues after mating. Although it generally accepted females play an important role generating paternity biases (i.e. cryptic female choice, CFC), we lack a quantitative understanding of the relative importance female-controlled processes influencing variance male reproductive fitness. Here, address this question experimentally using guppy Poecilia reticulata , polyandrous fish which pre- and postcopulatory jointly determine We used paired design to quantify patterns for pairs rival males across two mating contexts, one retained full control over double (natural) matings where sperm from same were artificially inseminated into female. then compared share given pair both enabling us test key prediction will depend on extent retain behavioural matings. As predicted, found stronger when with artificial insemination (AI) was used. Concomitantly, show opportunity (standardized success) greater AI Finally, success individual exhibited higher repeatability successive brood cycles Collectively, these findings underscore critical determining outcome our knowledge provide first experimental evidence behaviourally moderated components CFC increase selection.

Ocean acidification (OA) poses a major threat to marine organisms, particularly during reproduction when externally shed gametes are vulnerable changes in seawater pH. Accordingly, several studies on OA have focused how pH influence sperm behavior and/or rates of vitro fertilization. By contrast, few examined influences prefertilization gamete interactions, which crucial natural spawning events most fertilizing taxa. One mechanism interaction that forms an important component fertilization taxa is communication between and egg-derived chemicals. These chemical signals, along with the physiological responses they elicit, likely be highly sensitive chemistry. In this study, we experimentally tested possibility using blue mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, species females been shown use chemicals promote success from genetically compatible males. We conducted trials were allowed swim gradients under different CO2 (and therefore pH) treatments. found had elevated after swimming presence low (pH 7.6) compared ambient 8.0) seawater. This observed effect could implications for reproductive fitness external fertilizers, where compatibility plays critical role modulating many species. For example, might disrupt eggs' capacity avoid fertilizations by incompatible sperm. Our findings highlight need understand affects multiple stages sperm-egg interactions develop approaches disentangle female, male, population fitness.

The capacity for parents to influence offspring phenotypes via nongenetic inheritance is currently a major area of focus in evolutionary biology. Intriguing recent evidence suggests that sexual interactions among males and females, both before during mating, are important mediators such effects. Sexual typically extend beyond gamete release, involving sperm eggs, their associated fluids. However, the potential gamete-level induce parental effects remains under-investigated. Here, we test using an emerging model system studying interactions, external fertilizer Mytilus galloprovincialis . We employed split-ejaculate design whether exposing egg-derived chemicals (ECs) from female would affect fertilization rate viability when those were used fertilize different female's eggs. found separate, significant ECs non-fertilizing females on viability. effect indicates EC-driven can have implications fitness independent genotypes inherited by offspring. These findings provide rare indirect driven exclusively our knowledge first occur gametic fluids females.

Sperm cells exhibit extraordinary phenotypic diversity and rapid rates of evolution, yet the adaptive value most sperm traits remains equivocal. Recent findings suggest that to understand how selection targets ejaculates, we must recognize female-imposed physiological conditions often alter phenotypes. These changes may influence relationships among their association with fitness. Here, show chemical substances released by eggs (known modify physiology behaviour) patterns on a suite in mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. We use multivariate analyses characterize linear nonlinear acting (a) seawater alone (b) containing egg-derived chemicals (egg water). Our revealed canonical axes multiple (notably velocity, linearity percentage motile sperm) was important form overall, but importantly these were only evident when phenotypes measured egg water. reveal subtle way females can selection, implication overlooking environmentally moderated sperm, result erroneous interpretations (co)variation traits.
