Abstract Background Salt marshes are dominated by the smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora on US Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastlines. Although soil microorganisms well known to mediate important biogeochemical cycles in salt marshes, little is about role root microbiomes supporting health productivity marsh plant hosts. Leveraging situ gradients aboveground biomass as a natural laboratory, we investigated relationships between S. primary productivity, sediment redox potential, physiological ecology bulk sediment, rhizosphere, microbial communities at two Georgia barrier islands over growing seasons. Results A marked decrease prokaryotic alpha diversity with high abundance increased phylogenetic dispersion was found microbiome. Significantly higher rates enzymatic organic matter decomposition, relative abundances putative sulfur (S)-oxidizing, sulfate-reducing, nitrifying prokaryotes correlated productivity. Moreover, these functional guilds were overrepresented rhizosphere core microbiomes. Core microbiome bacteria from Candidatus Thiodiazotropha genus, metabolic potential couple S oxidation C N fixation, shown be highly abundant . Conclusions The active competitive species taking advantage available carbon substrates oxidized zone. Two microbially mediated mechanisms proposed stimulate productivity: (i) enhanced activity replenishes nutrients terminal electron acceptors stands, (ii) coupling chemolithotrophic (C) nitrogen (N) fixation root- rhizosphere-associated detoxifies sulfide zone while potentially transferring fixed host plant.

As endophytes are widely distributed in the plant’s internal compartments and despite having enormous potential as a biocontrol agent against postharvest diseases of fruits, fruit–endophyte–pathogen interactions have not been studied detail. Therefore, this review aims to briefly discuss colonization patterns pathogens host tissue, diversity distribution carposphere host–endophyte–pathogen molecular mechanism endophytic microbiome disease management fruits. Postharvest loss is one major concerns current century. It considered critical challenge food security for rising global population. However, manage loss, still, large population relies on chemical fungicides, which affect quality hazardous health surrounding environment. scientific community has searched alternatives last two decades. In context, microorganisms emerged an economical, sustainable, viable option with integral properties eliciting defense response pathogens. This extensively summarizes recent developments harvested fruits pathogens—the multiple traits endophytes. addition, upscale commercial production treatment discussed.

Endophytic fungi and bacteria live asymptomatically within plant tissues. In recent decades, research on endophytes has revealed that their significant role in promoting plants as been shown to enhance nutrient uptake, stress tolerance, disease resistance the host plants, resulting improved crop yields. Evidence shows can provide tolerances salinity, moisture, drought conditions, highlighting capacity farm them marginal land with use of endophyte-based strategies. Furthermore, offer a sustainable alternative traditional agricultural practices, reducing need for synthetic fertilizers pesticides, turn risks associated chemical treatments. this review, we summarise current knowledge agriculture, potential solution improving productivity general health. This review outlines key nutrient, environmental, biotic stressors, providing examples mitigating effects stress. We also discuss challenges agriculture further fully realise potential.
