Mangroves are recognized as a sink for plastic and other anthropogenic marine debris (AMD). The accumulation rates of AMD within these ecosystems, however, have not yet been assessed anywhere in the world. Here, we investigated standing stock rate at four most polluted mangroves Hong Kong over one year, focussing on its ecological impact diversity abundance vegetation benthic macrofauna. Plastics accounted ~80 % recorded AMD. accumulated an average 0.025 ± 0.141 items m-2. d-1 across all study sites. east coast presented highest (0.071 0.246 d-1), while those west had lowest (0.001 0.005 d-1). varied significantly zones (landward vs seaward), months, sites, with landward generally serving sinks items. Mangrove sapling density also among species, zones. A significant positive relationship between surface area covered by mangrove was observed. No effect macrobenthic crabs gastropods observed, which may reflect resilience ecosystem's faunal components.

Disaster preparedness and response, including for landslides, increasingly involves local knowledge. Incorporating contextual, dynamic experience-based knowledge leads to greater awareness of the interconnectedness geological, natural, social processes. Still, technical literature on urban landslide risk is mainly based geological natural dynamics and, a lesser extent, physical infrastructure. Moreover, although recognized as important in principle all aspects disaster management, it not frequently taken starting point identifying contextually specific factors practice. To gain insights into contributing risk, we conducted qualitative case study within landslide-prone informal settlement Manado, Indonesia. The comprised household interviews, transect walks, ethnographic observation. Our findings indicate that anthropogenic settlements, particularly inadequate solid waste may serve an overlooked factor landslides. This especially problematic low-income or neighborhoods, where detrimental effects poor management intersect with heightened vulnerability various hazards. ABSTRACT Pluvial flooding is a significant threat in many Sub-Saharan African cities, driven by rapid urbanisation, climate change, failures, and insufficient hydraulic capacity of existing urban drainage systems (UDSs). However, limited modelling studies have investigated the effect sediment solid waste accumulation on performance UDSs during extreme loading conditions. ABSTRACT Given the exponential rise in global plastic production and its significant ecological socio‐economic impacts, monitoring macroplastics rivers has become a central focus of water management efforts. However, standardized methodologies are lagging behind rate waste currently entering aquatic systems on scale. This translates into shortage spatially temporally refined data macroplastic pollution circulating inland waters. Plastic pollution and climate change are two major environmental issues of this century, with implications for ecosystem health, the economy, humankind. Plastics have potential to affect in multiple ways, yet we lack a thorough understanding what data on phenomenon where knowledge gaps are. Here, conducted systematic review assemble answer question: How do plastics impact through three mechanisms–emissions greenhouse gases across lifecycle, interference Earth’s carbon sinks, radiation budget? We searched all 14 databases Web Science relevant articles, amended pool articles from manual reference searching expert elicitations. Using rigorous inclusion exclusion criteria, including non-peer reviewed studies minimize risk bias, ultimately selected 143 our - 36 lifecycle gas emissions papers, 83 sink 24 budget papers. Based current available data, found that can emit up gigatonnes dioxide equivalents per year, most being produced at primary production product manufacture stages. Plastic waste mismanagement is a pertinent environmental concern among developing countries. The Philippines has significant plastic as the country top emitters of wastes to ocean. To manage wastes, government enacted policies. resulting paper carrying bags becoming prominent alternative. Switching from one bag another, however, requires clear assessment on implications trade-offs can occur. provide needed clarity, this study assessed and through life cycle (LCA) approach.
