Video cases are commonly used in teacher education to support evidence-based professional knowledge acquisition. Novice teachers, however, often struggle when learning with video, since they lack schemata that facilitate noticing and reasoning about relevant events. Scripted video case development provides an approach make events more salient visible. In alignment previously reported approaches, we applied design steps quality criteria within the presented project promote use further research. Thereby, introduce novel of using mock-up settings as a way identify naturalistic behavior basis for script development. User experience (UX) evaluations based on defined realistic experiences (i.e., authenticity), personal relevance utility value), engagement situational interest), challenge cognitive load) were carried out set four studies including N = 423 students. Findings conclusion our resulted high-quality scripted initial education.

A diagnostic judgment of a teacher can be seen as an inference from manifest observable evidence on student's behavior to his or her latent traits. This described by Bayesian model in-ference: The starts set assumptions the student (hypotheses), with subjective probabilities for each hypothesis (priors). Subsequently, he she uses observed (stu-dents' responses tasks) and knowledge conditional this (likelihoods) revise these assumptions. Many systematic deviations (biases, e.g. base-rate neglect, inverse fallacy) are reported in literature reasoning. In teacher's situation information (hypotheses, priors, likelihoods) is usually not explicitly represented numerically (as most research reasoning), but only qualitative esti-mations mind teacher. our study, we ask which extent individuals (approximately) apply rational strategy resort other biased strategies processing their judgments. We pose question respect non-numerical settings. To investigate question, developed scenario that visually displays all relevant graphically displayed space (called "hypothegon") – without recurring numerical representations mathematical procedures. 42 pre-service teach-ers were asked judge plausibility different misconceptions six students based decimal comparison tasks (e.g. 3.39 > 3.4). Applying classification proce-dure, identified three updating strategies: update (BUS, probabilities), combined (CES, ignoring prior including likelihoods), single (SES, using likelihood probable hypothesis). study 1, instruction relevance (priors weakly increased more information. 2, found strong visual explication prior-likelihood interaction led increase These results show phenomena general reasoning settings extend judgments

Abstract Providing opportunities for students to talk directly with their peers is a critical dimension facilitating discussions in mathematics and science, including argumentation‐focused which construct arguments critique others' arguments. Research suggests that supporting student‐to‐student argumentation are complex challenging practices preservice teachers (PSTs). Elementary PSTs from two science methods courses practiced within the context of an discussion. This study's main purpose was explore prompts 29 used encourage simulated classroom. Findings show were able use direct but just as likely may discourage talking each other. Most construction and/or critique. more indirect prompts, much like Talk Moves, consider ideas rather than requesting These findings have important implications future research, well teacher educators professional learning facilitators who support during discussions.

Abstract Accurate teacher judgments of student thinking are key to adaptive teaching. Yet, making such represents a particularly challenging task for teachers. Developing instruments that can elicit and capture teachers’ cognitive processes noticing interpreting is essential assessing their skills. These should be sensitive the specific qualities in respective domain. In this article, we present an approach develop validate text-based vignette test which meets these requirements. We used example aspects learners’ attitudes on creation evolution. identified relevant components domain included systematically varied written classroom vignettes. Experts confirmed clear salient representation intended include.
