The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced various educational systems on a global scale since 2020, and such impact will extend into the future. As PhD student who started her candidature shortly after outbreak of pandemic, I reflect my own experiences regarding how struggled, persevered, survived throughout period. do this through two illustrations from Hansel Gretel's journey woods in Brothers Grimm's story: (1) Dropping breadcrumbs—starting lockdown: felt series negative emotions doubted choice starting academia social isolation. (2) Surviving at gingerbread house—continuing pandemic: unstable situation nationally locally caused repeated lockdowns that led to delay research project. Since start voluntary online networking socially academically with other support understanding supervisors were key build persistence. By joining volunteer organisations university, benefited connections supported mental health academic development while meantime helping higher degree by students. In doing so, harvested accomplishments developed friendships. Such reciprocal relationships return have identity persistence journey. These contributed relocation original motives for undertaking research, self-reassurance identity, reinforcement aspirations expectations This chapter adopts theoretical concepts cultural-historical theory analyse psychological relation constantly changing environment. Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic caused major disruptions to the education sector, with detrimental effects on supervision of postgraduate students and their success. Higher institutions (HEIs) shut down observe COVID-19 protocols minimise spread virus. University closures forced postgraduate-supervision processes be conducted online, resulting in experiencing many challenges, such as, loss social networks interaction, lack access university computer laboratories software, inability collect face-to-face data, wellness mental problems. Whereas abundant research exists COVID-19, little is known about factors that contributed students’ success during pandemic. This qualitative case study reports promoted student pandemic, from perspective 23 students. Data were collected through an online questionnaire analysed colour-coding thematic categorisation. “Memeing It Up!”: Doctoral Students’ Reflections of Collegiate Virtual Writing Spaces During the COVID-19 Pandemic DOI

Completing a PhD is an isolating and arduous process, where doctoral students' wellbeing impacted. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the pre-existing feelings of social isolation lowered productivity resulting in further challenges due to absence established support systems. Higher education area particular interest, specifically Victoria, Australia, all students spent most years 2020 2021 lockdown. This chapter presents reflective autoethnographic account two experiences writing their theses during pandemic. We are sociological researchers pursuing PhDs who experienced extended lockdown while studying at Monash University's Faculty Education Australia. Our identifies how our socio-emotional academic struggles were intertwined they affected overall progress thesis. emotional aspects included, but not limited to, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, stress, lack support, which will be focus this chapter. use accounts share coping strategies by acknowledging effects these aspects. achieved through participating collegiate virtual spaces via Zoom, creating sense accountability for employing Pomodoro technique.
