Abstract Background Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) injures the infant brain during basic formation of developing functional connectome. This study aimed to investigate long-term changes in connectivity (FC) networks adolescent following neonatal HIE treated with therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Methods prospective, population-based cohort included all infants ( n = 66) TH-treated Stockholm 2007-2009 and a control group 43) children normal course. Assessment resting-state magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed at Karolinska Institutet, age 9–12 years. Results fMRI data met quality criteria for 35 HIE-cohort (mean [SD] MRI: 11.2 [0.74] years, 46% male) 30 10.1 [0.78] 53% male). Adverse outcome present 40% HIE-cohort. Non-parametric statistical analysis failed detect any significant p < 0.001) alterations FC HIE-cohort, nor between or without neurological symptoms. Conclusion Findings persistent specific did not remain after correction multiple comparisons this exposed HIE. Impact could be associated children. aberrant identified two were no longer comparisons. Larger, multi-center studies are needed understand whether network abnormalities persist long term related outcomes .

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) can result in cognitive dysfunction. Cognitive functions affected are subserved by few functional brain networks. Functional connectivity (FC) these networks be assessed with resting-state MRI (rs-fMRI). Alterations of FC have been reported children and adolescents prenatally exposed to alcohol. Previous reports varied substantially regarding the exact nature findings. The purpose this study was assess cognition-related young adults FAS.
