More than 5 years have passed since the Diffusion Tensor Image Analysis ALong Perivascular Space (DTI-ALPS) method was proposed with intention of evaluating glymphatic system. This is handy due to its noninvasiveness, provision a simple index in straightforward formula, and possibility retrospective analysis. Therefore, ALPS adopted evaluate system for many disorders studies. The purpose this review look back discuss at moment.

Research into magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-visible perivascular spaces (PVS) has recently increased, as results from studies in different diseases and populations are cementing their association with sleep, disease phenotypes, overall health indicators. With the establishment of worldwide consortia availability large databases, computational methods that allow to automatically process all this wealth information becoming increasingly relevant. Several approaches have been proposed assess PVS MRI, efforts made summarise appraise most widely applied ones. We systematically reviewed meta-analysed publications available up September 2023 describing development, improvement, or application quantification MRI. analysed 67 60 applications implementation, 112 publications. The two were use a morphological filter enhance PVS-like structures, Frangi being choice preferred by most, U-Net configuration without residual connections. Older adults population comprising 18 years old onwards were, overall, more frequent than using clinical samples. mainly assessed T2-weighted MRI acquired 1.5T and/or 3T scanners, although combinations it T1-weighted FLAIR images also abundant. Common associations researched included age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, white matter hyperintensities, sleep cognition, occupation-related, ethnicity, genetic/hereditable traits explored. Despite promising improvements overcome barriers such noise differentiation other confounds, need for joined wider testing increasing is now paramount.

Multiple lines of evidence indicate that altered dopamine signaling may be involved in neuropsychiatric disorders and common behavioral traits. Here we critically review collected during the past 40-plus years supporting role dysfunction attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We recapitulate basic components dopaminergic central nervous system, focusing on core enzymes, transporters receptors monoaminergic functions, particularly striatal cortical regions. summarize key human brain imaging genetic studies reporting associations between neurotransmission traits, with an emphasis ADHD. also consider ADHD context animal models single gene, metabolic, neurological established system. Examining this way leads us to conclude there is for involvement but limited a hypo-dopaminergic state per se as component propose path forward increase our understanding traits should focus its clinical subgroups, development how it interacts other neurotransmitter systems.

The link between glymphatic system function in the brain and alterations white-matter microstructure among individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine assessment of patients MDD using diffusion tensor imaging along perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index evaluate its association cerebral-white-matter abnormalities neuropsychological scores.

The glymphatic system, which facilitates cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow through the brain parenchyma, is important for development and waste clearance. Advances in imaging techniques, particularly magnetic resonance imaging, have make it possible to evaluate structures functions vivo. Recently, several studies focused on alterations of system pediatric disorders. This review discusses advances techniques their applications First, results reviewed indicate that a long‐lasting process continues into adulthood. Second, there need improved are non‐invasive fast improve suitability applications, as some existing methods use contrast injection susceptible motion artifacts from long scanning times. Several novel potentially feasible patients may be used future. Third, dysfunction associated with large number disorders, although only few recently been investigated. In conclusion, research remains an emerging field. preliminary provided unique insight pathological mechanism diseases, but mainly limited visualization enlarged perivascular spaces morphological measurements CSF volumes.
