Abstract Spotted‐wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, is an invasive pest in the United States that causes considerable damage to fruit crops. It responsible for many millions of dollars revenue loss. The female D. has a heavily sclerotized ovipositor and can lay eggs ripening or ripe fruit. arrival this species disrupted existing integrated management programmes, growers rely on repeated insecticide applications protect Organic have few chemical control options, their reliance spinosad increases risk developing resistance. We hypothesized combining phagostimulants with insecticides would increase efficacy by prompting flies spend more time contact residues. Therefore, objective study was evaluate effectiveness sucrose yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as combination organic biopesticides against blueberries. Abstract Yeasts play an important role in the life cycle and biology of insect pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), commonly known as spotted wing drosophila (SWD). Adult larvae this species are to feed benefit from yeast their diet. In addition, yeasts were found be attractive SWD repeatedly associated with SWD. Among those, Hanseniaspora uvarum is most mentioned. The present study explores chemical composition effects three H. strains five ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida sp., Issatchenkia terricola, Metschnikowia pulcherrima Saccharomycopsis vini ) diet adults. different used influenced mortality, fecundity ingestion by females. S. preferably ingested increased intra- extracellular concentrations compounds, such amino acids, carbohydrates, sugar alcohols organic produced or consumed differed among species. The information that female insects perceive and use during oviposition site selection is complex varies by species ecological niche. Even in relatively unexploited niches, females interact directly indirectly with conspecifics at sites. These interactions can take the form of host marking re-assessment prior sites decision-making process. Considerable research has focused on niche breadth preference polyphagous invasive pest Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae), but little exists how conspecific signals modulate behavior. We investigated three layers social D. may selection-(1) pre-existing egg density, (2) larval occupation, (3) adults. found presence larvae marking, not influenced behavior two factors interacted over time. Adult appeared to deter only an unmarked substrate. results are first behavioral evidence for a pheromone Drosophila. findings also help elucidate infestation patterns within crop fields natural areas.

While the majority of Drosophila species lays eggs onto fermented fruits, females suzukii pierce skin and lay into ripening fruits using their serrated ovipositors. The changes oviposition site preference must have accompanied this niche exploitation. In study, we established an assay to investigate effects commensal microbes deposited by conspecific heterospecific individuals showed that presence on substrate enhances egg laying melanogaster biarmipes , but discourages D. . This result suggests a drastic change has taken place in lineage leading how respond chemical cues produced microbes. We also found hardness substrate, resembling either or damaged fermenting affects response microbial growth, indicating mechanosensory stimuli interact with chemosensory-guided decisions select avoid sites.

Abstract Drosophila suzukii is a pest of soft and stone fruits that attracted to yeast volatile metabolites. has distinct summer winter morphs which are found in different habitats. We presented D. with isolation combinations, as either post-culture mixes or co-cultured, measured activity the flies laboratory choice tests Locomotor Activity Monitor proxy for attraction. Microorganisms play a central role in the biology of vinegar flies such as Drosophila suzukii and melanogaster: serving food source to both adults larvae, influencing range traits including nutrition, behavior, development. The niches utilized by fly species partially overlap, do microbiota that sustain them, interactions among these players may drive development crop diseases. To learn more about how one affect other, we isolated identified microbes from field-caught D. suzukii, then characterized their effects on melanogaster larval time laboratory. We found consistently included yeasts bacteria. It was dominated genus Hanseniaspora, bacteria families Acetobacteraceae Enterobacteriaceae. Raising under gnotobiotic conditions with each microbial isolate individually, some promoted relative axenic conditions, but most did not have significant effect. In contrast, nearly all tested significantly accelerated exception Starmerella bacillaris, which had opposite effect: slowing developmental rate. investigated basis for this effect examining whether S. bacillaris cells could growth, measuring survival other gut. Our results suggest is digested therefore cannot serve nutrition. These findings interesting implications possible between two Drosophilia nature. Abstract Drosophila suzukii flies cause economic losses to fruit crops globally. Previous work shows various species are attracted volatile metabolites produced by individual associated yeast isolates, but fruits naturally harbour a rich diversity of species. Here, we report the relative attractiveness D. yeasts presented individually or in combinations using laboratory preference tests and field trapping data. Laboratory trials revealed four 12 single isolates were attractive , which Metschnikowia pulcherrima Hanseniaspora uvarum also trials. Four out 10 involving Candida zemplinina Pichia pijperi M. The invasive pest, Drosophila suzukii attacks fresh soft-skinned fruit. Broad-spectrum insecticides are implemented for control but there is a need to reduce environmental risks and insecticide residues on fruits. Hanseniaspora uvarum yeast frequently found ripe fruits associated with D. suzukii. We aim exploit the ecological association attraction of H. by developing an attract-and-kill strategy, spray-application canopy not therefore investigated attraction, egg-laying mortality when exposed insecticidal yeast-based formulations.Hanseniaspora strongly attracted applied leaves grapevine, Vitis vinifera. Notably, this attractiveness was competitive grape berries that were susceptible infestation. Moreover, adding enhanced efficacy formulations against Flies treated yeast-insecticide showed higher laid lower number eggs compared flies alone. In wind tunnel, all treatments containing alone or in combination insecticides, caused similar upwind flight landing at odor source, which provides evidence addition did yeast.Hanseniaspora can be used manipulate behavior attracting formulations. Yeast improves effectiveness, suggesting sprays covering only, could fruit without compromising management efficacy.

Over the past 14 years, invasive vinegar fly, spotted-wing drosophila (Drosophila suzukii), has become one of most damaging fruit pests in United States. With regional economic losses estimated as high $500 million for moderate infestations, D. suzukii control represents an often-untenable cost to growers. Management relies heavily on chemical control, which may be applied up nine times season. The widespread use controls led concerns about insecticide resistance, and resistant field populations have already been documented California Michigan.
