This
study
explores
the
effectiveness
of
using
ChatGPT,
an
Artificial
Intelligence
(AI)
language
model,
as
Automated
Essay
Scoring
(AES)
tool
for
grading
English
a
Foreign
Language
(EFL)
learners’
essays.

50
essays
representing
various
types
including
analysis,
compare
and
contrast,
descriptive,
narrative,
opinion
written
by
10
EFL
learners
at
B2
level.

raters
ChatGPT
(4o
mini
version)
scored
International
Testing
System
(IELTS)
TASK
2
Writing
band
descriptors.
Adopting
quantitative
approach,
Wilcoxon
signed-rank
tests
Spearman
correlation
were
employed
to
scores
generated,
revealing
significant
difference
between
two
methods
scoring,
with
human
assigning
higher
than
ChatGPT.
