This paper outlines my research path over three decades while providing a review on the role of fish sounds in mate choice and reproduction. It also intends to provide advice young scientists point toward future avenues this field research. An overview studies different model species shows that male mating acoustic signals can inform females competitors about their size (dominant frequency, amplitude, sound pulse rate modulation), body condition (calling activity rate), readiness rate, number pulses sound). At least with parental care, such as toadfishes, gobies, pomacentrids, calling seems be main driver reproductive success. Playback experiments ran restricted consistently revealed prefer vocal silent males select for higher rates. personal synthesis concludes suggestion increase knowledge signals, especially considering emerging use monitor aquatic environments due increasing threats, like noise pollution.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) are a key tool for achieving goals biodiversity conservation and human well-being, including improving climate resilience equitable access to nature. At national level, they central components in the U.S. commitment conserve at least 30% of waters by 2030. By definition, primary goal an MPA is long-term nature; however, not all MPAs provide same ecological social benefits. A system that equitable, well-managed, representative connected, includes level protection can deliver desired outcomes best positioned support goals. We used new framework, The Guide, assess stage establishment 50 largest MPAs, which make up 99.7% total area (3.19 million km 2 ). Over 96% this area, 99% fully or highly against extractive destructive activities, Pacific ocean. Abstract Hearing, as defined by numerous investigators of vertebrate hearing, involves not only detection a sound, but the ability to respond sound behaviourally. Thus, in order understand what fish (or any animal) hears, it is important use behavioural methods that allow an animal “tell investigator” which sounds are detected and not. However, since 1980’s, most studies suggest they measuring hearing have used electrophysiological approaches measure response ear or lower levels central auditory system sounds. In this paper, we argue these measures do represent indicate can potentially while provide some useful interesting insights into mechanisms, valid sensitivity, understanding (anthropogenic otherwise) able to, obtained using studies. We also must be done carefully designed acoustic setups so nature stimulus responds appropriate well understood.

Marine traffic is the most common and chronic source of ocean noise pollution. Despite evidence detrimental effects exposure on fish, knowledge about critical early life stages - embryos larvae still scarce. Here, we take a natural habitat-based approach to examine potential impacts boat in wild fish population Lusitanian toadfish (Halobatrachus didactylus). In-situ experiments were carried out Tagus estuary, an estuary with significant commercial recreational traffic. Nests eggs exposed either ambient (control) or (treatment), for 1 fortnight. Eggs photographed before being assigned each treatment, after exposure, count number and/or assess survival, sampled study development oxidative stress energy metabolism-related biomarkers. Data concerns 4 sampling periods (fortnights) from 2 years. Results indicate that offspring survival did not differ between treatments, but induced effect response, development. Embryos showed reduced levels electron transport system (ETS), biomarker, while higher overall responses, increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) DNA damage (oxidative related responses), ETS, growth. With this study, provided first field biomarker responses. If these are able compensate acclimate later ontogeny, then anthropogenic has severely affect likely other marine fishes, further consequences populations resilience dynamics.
