Dissociation is a complex phenomenon, which occurs in various clinical conditions, including dissociative disorders, (complex) post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD, PTSD), and borderline personality (BPD). Traumatic considered an important risk factor, while the etiology of dissociation still debated. Next to traumatic experiences, temperamental neurobiological vulnerabilities seem contribute development dissociation. Stress-related prevalent symptom BPD, may interfere with psychosocial functioning treatment outcome. More research field strongly needed improve understanding management this phenomenon. This article collection brings together on trauma, special focus BPD or sub-clinical expressions BPD. In editorial, recent conceptualizations relevant previous are introduced order provide framework for novel research.

Abstract Dissociative and psychotic symptoms are transdiagnostic phenomena that frequently co-occur in individuals with personality disorder (PD). They associated heightened levels of psychopathology, psychosocial impairments, an increased risk self-harm, can interfere therapy progress. Therefore, they should be routinely assessed, using standardized measures. Psychotherapy is the first-line treatment for dissociative PD. While there increasing evidence efficacy cognitive- dialectical-behavioral interventions symptoms, further research needed regarding This chapter provides overview conceptualization within ICD-11 classification PD its empirical foundation, explores early trauma as a potential shared etiological factor, discusses assessment PD, including challenges differential diagnosis.

Abstract Dissociative experiences commonly occur alongside adverse childhood (ACE), yet research on their neurofunctional biomarkers has overlooked unique association with dimensions of abuse and neglect. We investigated interactions between dissociative abuse, anticipating anti-correlations the right-lateralized anterior middle frontal gyrus (raMFG) medial temporal lobe, as well gyri. Examining resting-state functional connectivity in 91 participants a history ACE, we employed seed-to-voxel analyses seeding raMFG. Multiple linear regression post-hoc moderation/mediation models explored individual effects dissociation ACE. The Experiences Scale (DES) Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) quantified A DES by CTQ-A (childhood abuse) interaction predicted an anti-correlation raMFG right hippocampus, moderated CTQ-A. CTQ revealed negative cingulate cortex. CTQ-N neglect) indicated that both supplementary motor area insula related positively to Our findings underscore distinct neural signature abuse-related experiences, potentially linked dissociated memories.

Background: Dissociative symptoms are suggested to compete with the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic treatment and frequently co-occur early life trauma self-harm patterns, including self-injury, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, which characteristic for borderline personality disorder (BPD).Objective: We explore connections between dissociation other BPD features like childhood traumatization examine impact trait on both immediate follow-up psychotherapy outcomes.Method: In this naturalistic prospective evaluation study, we investigated psychopathology general psychological distress (SCL-90), depression (BDI-II), borderline-specific pathology (BSL) in 131 patients pre post a certified 8-week inpatient Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), as well 3- 6-month treatment. Prior therapy, evaluated (Dissociative Experience Scale), (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), patterns (clinical interview). performed network analysis interplay dissociation, self-harm, traumatization. To analyse influence outcomes, employed linear mixed models. Results: Psychopathology (SCL-90, BDI-II BSL) exhibited significant reductions at post-treatment assessments when compared baseline measurements. Higher levels were consistently related higher but did not suggest poorer symptom reduction during DBT. However, predicted reduced benefits from DBT, regardless burden. The revealed close association self-injury derealization/depersonalization, while frequency attempts was more closely connected emotional abuse, identified central node network. Conclusions: Dissociation outcomes regarding benefits, highlighting need address interventions. Based estimated structure, treating dissociative could potentially mitigate especially abuse linked attempts.

Dissociative symptoms constitute a transdiagnostic phenomenon not only characterizing dissociative disorders but also occurring across broad range of other mental such as posttraumatic stress disorder or borderline personality disorder. In the latter disorders, depersonalization, derealization, gaps in awareness significantly burden patients' wellbeing and functioning. Many efforts have been undertaken to better understand these debilitating symptoms. However, empirical findings yet converged many areas (e.g., considering neurobiological correlates effects psychopathology on treatment outcome), which might partially be due heterogeneity limitations employed methodology. Here, we critically review current state-of-the-art methodology dissociation research, comparing methods assess symptoms, provoke laboratory, select participant sample, consider critical sample characteristics. Discussing informative value limits various standard novel methodological approaches, aim provide information nuanced guidance for future research. By means, raise harmonize standards research enable researchers all career stages enter, navigate, make significant lasting contribution ultimately contributing understanding psychopathology.

Dissociation is a multifaceted phenomenon that occurs in various mental disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), but also non-clinical populations. Severity of childhood trauma (abuse, neglect) plays an important role the development dissociation and BPD. However, complex interplay different dissociative symptoms, BPD features, self-reported experiences not yet fully understood. Graph-theoretical network analysis can help to better understand such multivariate interrelations. Objective: This study aimed investigate associations between dissociation, using graph-theoretical approach. Data was collected online via international health platforms research sites. N = 921 individuals (77.4% female) were included; 40% reported pathological levels dissociation. Variables assessed with established psychometric scales (Dissociative Experiences Scale; Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline Features Childhood Trauma Questionnaire) analyzed within partial correlation network. Positive bivariate correlations all variables found. When accounting for their mutual influence on each other, predominantly connected features effect sizes rp .028 .126, while still showing slight unique relationship physical neglect (rp .044). Findings suggest close features. While BPD, its recall may explain current co-occurrence. Prospective studies are needed shed more light causal pathways which factors contribute link (features).

Abstract Purpose of Review Physical pain is an underrecognized area dysregulation among those with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Disturbances are observed within the experience acute, chronic, and everyday physical experiences for people BPD. We aimed to synthesize research findings on multiple areas in BPD order highlight potential mechanisms underlying association between dysregulation. Recent Findings Potential biological include altered neural responses painful stimuli cognitive-affective regions brain, as well potentially low basal levels endogenous opioids. Emotion broadly mediates pain. Certain psychological may attenuate acute pain, such dissociation, whereas others, negative affect, exacerbate it. Social challenges patients healthcare providers hinder appropriate treatment chronic Summary Dysregulated common important shaping health outcomes including elevated symptoms, conditions, risk problematic substance use.

Abstract Background Sexual risk behavior in patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is supposed to be associated traumatic experiences and dissociative symptoms. Nevertheless, scientific research thereon scarce which might due the high prevalence of sexual trauma fear overwhelming explicit content. Methods We investigated a clinical sample BPD ( n = 114) compared them matched healthy controls (HC) concerning symptoms derealization, depersonalization, conversion situations. In subgroup 41) HC 40) after exposure an acoustically presented erotic narrative were assessed lab. Regression analyses used examine associations between trauma, post-traumatic stress (PTSD), dissociation situations, risky behavior. Results Patients endorsed higher situations retrospectively lab HC. revealed that depersonalization explained by severity BPD, while derealization was PTSD symptomatology. Impulsive uncommitted partner group showed inverse association. Conclusion Our findings highlight importance addressing distinct when counselling treating women BPD. long term, this could contribute reduction Trial registration This analysis part larger ongoing study registered prior accessing data (Registration trial DRKS00029716).
