BackgroundBody image disturbance and anxiety are core features of anorexia nervosa (AN), a psychiatric disorder with one the highest mortality rates. This study examined efficacy novel non-pharmacological treatment, floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) on body in inpatients AN.MethodsThis parallel group randomised controlled trial compared vs. care as usual women girls hospitalised for treatment AN Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Participants were 2:1 ratio to receive eight, twice-weekly, 60-min sessions 4 weeks, addition usual, or usual. The primary outcome was average change dissatisfaction from pre- post-float measured by Photographic Figure Rating Scale. secondary state version State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Longitudinal effects also examined. All analyses conducted using intention-to-treat principle. Planned linear mixed models tested effect preregistered (clinicaltrials.gov NCT03610451).FindingsBetween March 16, 2018 February 25, 2021, 133 participants screened eligibility, 86 consented. Eighteen excluded after consent, final randomisation sample 68 (45 floatation-REST; 23 usual). There two session condition interactions (p = 0.00026) < 0.0001), such that exhibited acute (i.e., post-session) reductions (floatation-REST mean (Δm) −0.43; 95% CI −0.56 −0.30, p 0.0001, Cohen's d 0.23), Δm −15.75; −17.95 −13.56, 1.52); however, no significant changes. With regard longitudinal results, there time interaction between baseline immediately post intervention 0.012) six-month follow up 0.0019). At intervention, trending reduction (Δm −0.41, −0.86 0.03, 0.068) 0.61; −0.04 1.27, 0.070). six-months post-intervention, lower −0.91; −1.37 −0.45, 0.0020, 0.53) whereas reported 0.35; −0.28 0.98, 0.96) relative baseline. adverse events related during study.InterpretationOur findings suggest Floatation-REST decreased acutely each float at follow-up. has potential utility AN. These results may be limited some generalisability concerns given recruitment modest receiving inpatient single site.FundingThe William K. Warren Foundation.

This study evaluated the factorial structure and invariance of Multidimensional Assessment Interoceptive Awareness-v2 (MAIA-2). We also investigated incremental validity MAIA-2 factors for predicting eating pathology beyond appetite-based interoception. US-based online respondents (N = 1294; Mage=48.7 ± 18.4; 63% cis women; 78% White) were sampled. conducted hierarchical stepwise regressions, dominance analysis, multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses across age, gender, disorder symptoms. An 8-factor, 24-item Brief (BMAIA-2) model showed optimal fit. Using strict criteria (Δ CFI > 0.002), configural, metric, scalar supported. After controlling interoception, higher scores on body listening, noticing, emotional awareness unexpectedly predicted worse pathology, while not worrying, distracting, trusting less as hypothesized. Dominance analysis no subscales contributed >2% unique variance to global disordered For loss control eating, however, worrying was dominant BMAIA-2 predictor, explaining 5% Research supported relevance multiple interoceptive sensibility dimensions captured by understanding eating-based pathology. Future studies should consider assessing its using behavioral tasks autonomic biomarkers interoception better understand complex interplay among skills behavior.

Refractory chronic cough (RCC) remains a persistent clinical challenge, often resistant to traditional treatments. Emerging evidence now positions RCC as disorder rooted in hypersensitivity, driven primarily by central neural processes rather than external physiological causes. Central this understanding is the concept of interoception-the brain's ability perceive and interpret internal bodily signals. Neuroimaging research has identified abnormalities brain regions associated with interoception inhibitory control among patients. Interestingly, shares neurophysiological characteristics other disorders like overactive bladder urinary urge incontinence (OAB/UUI), which also involve dysregulated interoceptive mechanisms. Behavioral treatments for OAB/UUI are highly effective regarded first-line treatment many consensus guidelines. behavioral have been shown induce neuroplastic changes, further underscoring their efficacy potential parallel interventions. suppression therapy (BCST), an efficacious RCC, may leverage similar adaptations, enhancing processing control. Given multi-dimensional nature interoception, encompasses sensory perception shaped learning, memory, emotional context, BCST's engagement multiple pathways offers alternative therapeutic option compared single-mechanism pharmacological Future should prioritize exploring mechanistic underpinnings BCST interoception-based therapies developing more comprehensive options. Such holds promise improving patient outcomes, alleviating significant healthcare burden advancing our hypersensitivity disorders.

Interoceptive dysfunction could be one mechanism that facilitates the weight stigma-disordered eating association. Hence, aim of this study was to experimentally test whether interoceptive mediates relation between stigma and disordered eating. Participants (n = 135; 80.7% White; 72.6% women) were college students aged 18 25 who reported binge symptoms. 66) randomly assigned interact with a confederate showing stigmatizing attitudes or control condition 69) where did not show towards any groups. then completed behavioral measure gastric interoception, an ad-lib meal yogurt, lastly self-report measures for body trust, urges engage in future restriction. Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by low body weight, disturbed eating, image disturbance, anxiety, and interoceptive dysfunction. However, the neural processes underlying these dysfunctions in AN are unclear. This investigation combined an pharmacological probe, peripheral β-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol, with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine whether individuals relative healthy comparison participants show dysregulated coupling central autonomic network brain regions. Resting-state was performed 23 weight-restored female age- mass index–matched before after receiving isoproterenol infusions. Whole-brain connectivity (FC) changes were examined using seeds amygdala, anterior insular cortex, posterior cingulate ventromedial prefrontal cortex performing physiological noise correction procedures. Relative participants, adrenergic stimulation caused widespread FC reductions group between regions motor, premotor, frontal, parietal, visual Across both groups, inversely associated trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Trait), depression (9-item Patient Health Questionnaire), negative perception (Body Shape Questionnaire) measures, but not resting heart rate. These results accounted for baseline differences. Weight-restored females a state-dependent disruption of signaling autonomic, frontoparietal, sensorimotor networks that facilitate representation visceromotor regulation. Additionally, associations other suggest dysfunctional processing may contribute affective disturbance AN.

This proof-of-concept study explores the role of aberrant interoception as a possible mechanism underlying restrictive eating symptoms in avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) compared to anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy comparisons (HC).We report preliminary normative adolescent interoceptive data HCs (n = 100) adolescents with ARFID 30) AN (N 23). Adolescents (12-18) participated one-time virtual visit assess heartrate guessing accuracy (interoceptive accuracy), correlation between confidence guess awareness), self-reported sensibility).HC had comparable outcomes relative published adult norms, consistent existing literature. Data suggest that have poor heartbeat experience challenges deciphering signals, possibly contributing symptoms. While greater accuracy, they cite difficulty trusting body cues, perhaps their lack cue detection.Preliminary results reflect differences three groups. In this study, we wanted understand how individuals disorders, like (AN), sense respond different signals body, such heartbeat. process is called interoception. Difficulty sensing can lead various mental health disorders. We asked participants without an while wearing finger pulse oximeter, track (or accurate guesses were). also measured overall metacognitive awareness ability accurately interpret signals. Our replicate findings teenagers. For teens those listening bodies, but good accuracy. Teens better were more unsure about signaling. Overall, our initial disorders sense, interpret, might help explain habits. More research needed area.
