Interoceptive dysfunction could be one mechanism that facilitates the weight stigma-disordered eating association. Hence, aim of this study was to experimentally test whether interoceptive mediates relation between stigma and disordered eating. Participants (n = 135; 80.7% White; 72.6% women) were college students aged 18 25 who reported binge symptoms. 66) randomly assigned interact with a confederate showing stigmatizing attitudes or control condition 69) where did not show towards any groups. then completed behavioral measure gastric interoception, an ad-lib meal yogurt, lastly self-report measures for body trust, urges engage in future restriction. We tested path model including our variable, urges. Contrary hypotheses, exposure related increased restriction urges, less caloric consumption. it is possible leads short-term immediately following event, which increase risk downstream at later time. Regardless condition, lower levels self-reported trust interoception higher intentions as well To mitigate potential societal harms stigma, clinicians should consider incorporating assessments weight-neutral approaches their clinical work.

Significant comorbidity has been demonstrated between feeding and eating disorders autism. Atypical interoception (perception of bodily signals) may, at least in part, be responsible for this association, as it implicated the aetiology both conditions. However, significant methodological limitations are impeding progress area. This paper provides a brief overview how linked to autism adolescent adult populations before identifying several issues with current measures interoception. We suggest that may contributing inconsistency empirical literature, provide suggestions future research.

BackgroundBody image disturbance and anxiety are core features of anorexia nervosa (AN), a psychiatric disorder with one the highest mortality rates. This study examined efficacy novel non-pharmacological treatment, floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) on body in inpatients AN.MethodsThis parallel group randomised controlled trial compared vs. care as usual women girls hospitalised for treatment AN Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. Participants were 2:1 ratio to receive eight, twice-weekly, 60-min sessions 4 weeks, addition usual, or usual. The primary outcome was average change dissatisfaction from pre- post-float measured by Photographic Figure Rating Scale. secondary state version State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Longitudinal effects also examined. All analyses conducted using intention-to-treat principle. Planned linear mixed models tested effect preregistered (clinicaltrials.gov NCT03610451).FindingsBetween March 16, 2018 February 25, 2021, 133 participants screened eligibility, 86 consented. Eighteen excluded after consent, final randomisation sample 68 (45 floatation-REST; 23 usual). There two session condition interactions (p = 0.00026) < 0.0001), such that exhibited acute (i.e., post-session) reductions (floatation-REST mean (Δm) −0.43; 95% CI −0.56 −0.30, p 0.0001, Cohen's d 0.23), Δm −15.75; −17.95 −13.56, 1.52); however, no significant changes. We provide evidence effectiveness practical feasibility novel real-time haptic heartbeat supplementation technology combining principles biofeedback sensory enhancement. In randomized controlled study, we applied developed naturalistic feedback on group 30 adults, while another adults received more traditional visual feedback. A single session haptic, but not resulted in increased accuracy confidence, measured by heart rate discrimination task, shift attention towards body. Interoception, which refers to the perception of body's internal state, is implicated in emotional processes and psychopathological disorders. Over last decades, different tools have been developed measure interoceptive accuracy, or ability accurately perceive physiological signals. Most these focused on cardiac interoception, but respiratory interoception has less investigated due more complex portable equipment required. In this study, we suggest a new duration discrimination (DDR) task that does not require equipment. Using an adaptive staircase procedure, aims determine individual's detect exhalation longer than their resting reference duration. One hundred twenty-three healthy subjects completed DDR task, heart rate discrimination, filled out questionnaires awareness (Multidimensional Assessment Interoceptive Awareness), alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale [TAS]), affects (Positive Negative Affect [PANAS]), anamnestic. Results demonstrated good consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .93) task. On average, needed 99.22% (SD 36.38) time addition prolonged exhalation. Higher self-reported fitness levels, counting during lower difficulty describing feelings (TAS subscale), predicted higher conclusion, study demonstrates utility as valid interoception.
