Species with high economic relevance are widely studied in contrast low species such as Panopeus africanus, a small crab wide distribution along the eastern Atlantic coast, which remains poorly regarding to biological and ecological issues. Knowledge of reproductive patterns is essential understand populations dynamics life-cycle traits. The main objective present research was study P. africanus. population size structure, maturation stages gametogenic development aspect, at maturation, periods morphometric–fecundity relationships africanus southern Portuguese coast (Ria Formosa) analysed. Crabs were sampled monthly, from January 2019 December 2021, traps hand collected. crab's carapace width (CW) ranged between 7 52 mm, it observed that smaller larger CW classes, proportion males higher, however intermediate classes sex ratio near 1:1. gonads characterized based on histological analysis. Males presented four maturity developmental where two immature mature. Females six stages, immature, Regardless sex, mean 20 mm CW. A percentage mature individuals throughout year however, colder months lower. Additionally, ovigerous females only warmer months, pointing short breeding period occurring months. Fecundity 12368 84140 eggs/female, following positive correlation CW/egg number. These novel results allowed shed light inhabiting contributing also better understanding basic biology this populations.

Gonadal histology is a helpful tool to validate species' macroscopic maturity stages in fisheries biology. Regardless of the many studies on Carcinus maenas, there are still few concerning gonads tissue and description stages. In Portugal, information regarding this biology help support regulation crab fisheries, including minimum landing size, has not yet been defined. work, macro microscopic characteristics reproductive cycle C. oogenesis, spermatogenesis development along Portuguese coast described, new scale based histological analyses suggested. During 2019 2020, adult maenas (both males females) were collected from Ria de Aveiro estuary, Rio Sado Formosa lagoon, respectively, North, Center, South Portugal. No-significant differences (P > 0.05) observed carapace width individual weight between all systems. Significant < gonad weight, gonadosomatic index, Fulton's condition index estuary lagoon. Furthermore, significant oocyte diameter northern southernmost locations suggest geographic variation related local environmental conditions each system. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed stage an association, similar morphometry Formosa. Temperature was correlated both From criteria, it that females previously classified within late 2 should be considered mature, so classification change current ovary's developmental proposed. These findings can allow researchers reclassify estimations ogives fishery. The proposed validated by used elsewhere.

Shallow semi-enclosed coastal lagoons are recognized as important biodiversity hotspots and nursery areas for many organisms. However, the topology of complex food web networks therein has never been studied. Highly defined were assembled Ria de Aveiro, Alvor Formosa. Their structural network properties analysed compared to those large open estuaries, small intermittent well other marine ecosystems. The main conclusion was that these dominated by intermediate species like estuarine systems, however they present more trophic (higher connectance) than even though having shorter chains. They also have lower mean path length between pairs species. Shorter chain means disturbance is likely travel from basal top likewise bottom web, while low implies a higher likelihood disruption one affects any These fragilities may be somewhat counterbalanced high connectance networks. most connected (with highest degree = number links at node) in crab shrimp non-indigenous blue appears among 5 commercial Sparid fishes play particularly roles both highly generalist predators. Top mostly birds. 10 with predators all amphipods encompass insects, crabs, gastropods, Formosa exception polychaete. particular inherent potential fragility lagoon webs should taken into account when designing environmental management plans.

ABSTRACT Estuarine fisheries are of high regional socio‐economic importance worldwide, by providing an important livelihood for many families. The Portuguese green crab ( Carcinus maenas ) fishery was assessed using a assessment to understand the and stock analysis determine exploitation status during 1960–2020. Fisher knowledge revealed that fishing family affair provided hundreds families directly targeting crabs, with catches exported Spain 1960–1990s, in later years, demand increased as bait octopus fishing. Despite its importance, regulated without scientific basis economic value crabs remained similar through time. Annual landings never exceeded sustainable catch rates, but engagement declined due low compared other regulatory hurdles. Consequently, number fishermen 20–30 elderly men on largest estuaries, currently verge extinction. Fishers pointed reduction minimum landing size enforcement crab‐specific trap regulations ways avert decline. Such changes would stimulate recruitment new fishers, while reducing pressure estuarine resources diversification.

Understanding the relationship between environmental temperature and biological traits of organisms is fundamental to inferring potential impacts climate change. In case marine poikilotherm species, seawater one main driving forces processes, with consequences at higher levels organization such as population ecosystem. this study, we analysed differences in maximum carapace width (CWmax), size maturation, relative duration reproductive season for green crab (Carcinus maenas) along a gradient. An extensive review bibliographic data was performed on studies published 1962 2020, gathering C. maenas from 55 different populations, spread over 20 degrees latitude 14.2 °C sea surface (SST). addition, were collected five lagoons estuaries continental Portuguese coast. The average SST CWmax, age reduction egg bearing understand role variation these characteristics across latitudinal There significant CWmax males CW females respectively. results extrapolate each local projected increase caused by change suggest an effect morphometric regions. These changes comprise overall body size, enlargement season, shortening larval developmental time, decrease crabs maturation. Secondary fecundity connectivity populations are discussed.
