n fact, you are right in several of the comments extracted from article published by Belafsky 2008.However, we believe, as explained our article, that experience and results with EAT-10 provided many clinical research teams all around world during last 15 years, summarized fully supports its use a screening tool for oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD).As defined original study, "the is self-administered survey instrument subjective assessment dysphagia".You et al. studied validity reliability not only patients dysphagia, but also esophageal head neck cancer gastroesophageal reflux disease. As proposed Belafsky, was developed to «document initial severity monitor treatment response persons wide array swallowing disorders (1).This objective aligns paper's scope, sought explore specific application this OD achieve goal, analyzed up 47 studies described table 1 manuscript. We want clarify do propose diagnostic substitute or replacement current gold standard diagnosis. As stated paper, emphasize «The standardized could serve primary routine practice across range diseases settings, thereby enhancing likelihood early diagnosis management" (2).As clearly manuscript, algorithm (Figure 2) requires threestep approach consisting instrumental assessments.Patients who have 'failed' test at risk require further and/or assessment(s).The phase aims identify OD, signs symptoms mechanisms pathophysiology impaired safety efficacy select optimal treatment. You sentence paper should be "…EAT-10 provide way reporting identifying prevalence OD".

Purpose: Swallowing difficulties have a substantial impact on the burden experienced by care partners of individuals with neurodegenerative disease. Given this, there is clear need to easily identify and quantify unique aspects swallowing-related burden. The purpose this study was establish validity reliability Caregiver Analysis Reported Experiences Disorders (CARES) screening tool in Method: Survey data were collected from an international sample 212 caring for family members amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( n = 49), dementia 110), or Parkinson's disease 53). Respondents completed CARES, Eating Assessment Tool-10, International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative–Functional Scale, Zarit Burden Interview. Reliability CARES evaluated via internal consistency alpha coefficients, Spearman's rho correlations, logistic regression analyses receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: scores demonstrated excellent (α .90–.95) high test–retest r .86–.91). found be valid, as increased associated severity swallowing .79 .84), diet restrictiveness −.50 −.54), general caregiver .36 .40). had discrimination between without self-reported burden, score ≥ 4 suggesting heightened risk experiencing Conclusions: Results valid reliable that can detect related among living (score 4). Clinical implementation requires concerted efforts larger multidisciplinary team who collaboratively presence target multifaceted sources partner may experiencing.

Background/Objectives: The population of Japan has a high life expectancy, but there is room for improvement in terms the country’s healthy expectancy. long period care dependency among Japan’s elderly also major economic health challenge. Dementia factor need care, and its prevention crucial urgent There are recent reports possible association between changes oral function cognitive impairment, details this remain unclear. To clarify relationship poor we conducted an exploratory investigation using assessment (Mini-Cog) administered large-scale study relevance to function. Methods: was 678 community-dwelling individuals aged ≥65 years living Tarumizu city, Japan, 2019. Cognitive assessed Mini-Cog test, survey modification content Oral Hypofunction Examination as defined by Japanese Society Gerodontology. Results: participants’ median age 73 years. results revealed scores below hypofunction criterion occlusal force, tongue pressure, diadochokinesis, swallowing binomial logistic regression analysis indicated that tongue–lip motor independently associated with relation impairment. Conclusions: impairment Aiming improve may prevent exacerbation

Background/Objectives: The Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) is commonly used in oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) research as a self-report measure of functional health status and health-related quality life. DHI was developed validated using classic test theory. aim this study to use item response theory (Rasch analysis) evaluate the psychometric properties DHI. Methods: Prospective, consecutive patient data were collected at or otorhinolaryngology clinics. sample included 256 adults (53.1% male; mean age 65.2) risk OD. measure's scale, person fit characteristics, differential functioning, dimensionality evaluated. Results: rating scale ordered but showed potential gap category labels for overall measure. (0.91) (0.97) reliability excellent. reliably separated persons into least three distinct groups (person separation index = 3.23) based on swallowing abilities, subscales inadequate separation. All infit squares acceptable range except underfitting 22 (F). More misfitting evident Z-Standard statistics. Differential functioning results indicated good performance an level measure; however, contrary expectation, OD diagnosis presented only with marginal DIF. two dimensions contrast suggested by original authors. Conclusions: failed reproduce subscales. Caution needed subscales; total score should be used. A redevelopment needed; given complexities involved addressing these issues, development new that ensures content validity may preferred.

: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is defined as a swallowing disorder in which it becomes difficult to form bolus and move food from the mouth proximal part of esophagus. Several factors can cause this geriatric patients. With oropharyngeal dysphagia, patient's social isolation risk depression increase, while quality life deteriorates.

Background: Head-and-neck cancer (HNC) can cause oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD). Early identification of OD in newly diagnosed HNC patients is important to better prepare for their treatment trajectory. The aim this study (1) assess the prevalence within three weeks before start and (2) investigate which demographic oncological characteristics may be risk factors associated with at baseline. Methods: Patients (N = 225) completed Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) Short Nutritional Questionnaire (SNAQ). Logistic regression analysis was conducted examine association between versus characteristics. Results: A total 21.3% (proportion 0.213; 95% CI 0.163–0.274) were OD. After correction age, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) grade, primary tumor location, a significant found advanced-stage Additionally, post hoc revealed malnutrition Conclusions: Approximately one-fifth all are OD, emerging as These findings empower health professionals toward more effective screening management patient’s profile treatment.

Objective The present study aimed to investigate the symptomatic swallowing complaints in individuals with total laryngectomy (TL) and reveal how kinematics differs between those without dysphagia complaints. Methods A of 34 subjects TL were included study. Swallowing (Group 1) compared 2). Kinematic parameters including pharyngeal transit duration (PTD), maximum constriction ratio (MPCR), upper esophageal sphincter opening (UESOR), (UESOD), bolus clearance (BCR) investigated from Videofluoroscopic Study (VFSS) records via ImageJ software. Results Symptomatic determined 47.1% ( n = 16). Difficulty while solid foods pills, diminished pleasure eating, food getting stuck throat, increased level stress during among major cohort. PTD, MPCR, BCR significantly higher than without. Conclusion These preliminary findings indicate that almost half may have underlying pathophysiology this phenomenon be devianced kinematic population. Therefore, it is recommended include measurements evaluation protocol TL, most notably Level Evidence 3 Laryngoscope , 135:809–817, 2025
