The relational shift in urban ecology: From place and structures to multiple modes of coproduction for positive urban futures

Abstract
This
perspective
emerged
from
ongoing
dialogue
among
ecologists
initiated
by
a
virtual
workshop
in
2021.
A
transdisciplinary
group
of
researchers
and
practitioners
conclude
that
urban
ecology
as
science
can
better
contribute
to
positive
futures
focusing
on
relationships,
rather
than
prioritizing
structures.
Insights
other
relational
disciplines,
such
political
ecology,
governance,
design,
conservation
also
contribute.
Relationality
is
especially
powerful
given
the
need
rapidly
adapt
changing
social
biophysical
drivers
global
systems.
These
unprecedented
dynamics
are
understood
through
lens
traditional
structural
questions.
We
use
three
kinds
coproduction—of
social-ecological
world,
science,
actionable
knowledge—to
identify
key
processes
coproduction
within
places.
Connectivity
crucial
ecology.
Eight
themes
emerge
joint
explorations
paper
point
toward
action
for
improving
life
environment
futures.

Abstract
The
world
has
become
urban;
cities
increasingly
shape
our
worldviews,
relation
to
other
species,
and
the
large-scale,
long-term
decisions
we
make.
Cities
are
nature,
but
they
need
align
better
with
ecosystems
avoid
accelerating
climate
change
loss
of
biodiversity.
We

diverse
realities

cities.
This
can
be

in
part,
by
shifts

Ecosystem
restoration
has
historically
been
viewed
as
an
ecological
endeavor,
but
possesses
significant,
yet
largely
untapped,
potential
a
catalyst
for
personal
and
social
transformation.
We
highlight
the
opportunity
to
enhance
community
resilience
by
increasing
agency
collective
action
countering
pervasive
perception
that
we
are
powerless
witnesses
environmental
decline.
In
this
perspective,
take
“bright
spots”
approach
successful
examples
of
ecosystem
have
helped
nurture
sense
place,
foster
optimism,
cultivate
stronger
more
diverse
networks.
These
three
individual-
community-level
capacities
lead
increased
psychosocial
resilience,
which
is
key
component
resilience.
Our
aim
spark
discussion
research
better
understand
how
can
transform
from
technical
endeavor
practice
process
through
human–nature
relationships
infused
with
deliberate
meaning
human
well-being
improved.
With
current
calls
upscale
technologize
meet
sustainable
development
goals,
cannot
lose
sight
value
community-engaged
strategy

benefits.

Abstract
The
new
capital
city
of
Indonesia,
Nusantara,
is
being
developed
with
the
goal
creating
a
liveable
that
in
harmony
nature.
Nusantara
planned

sustainable
forest
city,
65%

designated
protected
zone.
development
strategy
includes
measures
to
control
deforestation,
promote
reforestation,
protect
biodiversity,
involve
local
and
indigenous
communities,
impose
moratorium
on
mining
plantation
licenses.
One
main
challenges
implementing
these
strategies
condition
ecosystems
last
decades,
which
have
been
damaged
due
resource
extraction
conversion
primary
forests
for
various
land
uses.
This
has
led
threat
biodiversity
habitat
endemic
flora
fauna.
Efforts
are
made
establish
robust
regulatory
framework
achieve
ecological
justice
goals
by
protecting
wisdom.
paper
will
present
data,
information,
analysis
existing
use,
potential,
regulations,
policy
rules
aimed
at
special
authority
provides
an
opportunity
development,
but
there
still
need
be
