Influenza is primarily considered an acute respiratory infection but can lead to a myriad of medium and long-term sequelae across every major organ system in the body. Increasing awareness, gaining broader understanding its mechanistic pathways, identifying at-risk individuals, determining how better protect them could help minimize impact. The aim this podcast, featuring Dr Stefania Maggi, Annemarijn de Boer, Melissa K. Andrew, outline main influenza complications their impact beyond disease, as well highlighting vaccination tool at our disposal. Both physical cognitive function be affected result infection, notably frailer which turn may loss independence. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection initially results in distress symptoms but can also lead to central nervous system (CNS) and neurological manifestations, significantly impacting disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, strict lockdown measures introduced curtail the spread of COVID-19 have raised concerns over wellbeing dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease. The aim this review was discuss overlapping molecular pathologies potential bidirectional relationship between dementia, as well impact lockdown/restriction on neuropsychiatric (NPS) dementia. Furthermore, we aimed assess NPS caregivers, exploring its effects quality extent care they provide patients. We utilized PubMed Google Scholar databases search for articles COVID-19, disease, lockdown, caregivers. Our highlights that face an increased risk complications. these are likely experience greater cognitive decline. It appears issues primarily caused by SARS-CoV-2 appear be further exacerbated restrictive/lockdown measures. Moreover, during pandemic negatively impacted both NPSs caregivers their perception patients. Thus, additional safeguard measures, along pharmacological non-pharmacological approaches, needed protect light possible future pandemics.

Abstract Background Dementia susceptibility likely begins years before symptoms. Early life has not been comprehensively tested for dementia associations. Method In the US Health and Retirement Study (normal baseline cognition; n=16,509; 2008-2018 waves), 31 exposures age 16 were retrospectively assessed with ten-year incident cognitive status (dementia, impaired, normal). Using parallel logistic models, each exposure was cognition, adjusting sex, age, follow-up, race/ethnicity, personal/parental education. Result 14.5% had impairment 5.3% dementia. Depression associated 1.71 (95%CI:1.28,2.26) times higher odds of impairment, relative to normal cognition. Headaches/migraines 1.63 (95%CI:1.18,2.22) impairment. Learning problems 1.75 (95%CI:1.05,2.79) Childhood self-rated health fair (1.86, 95%CI:1.27,2.64) poor (3.39, 95%CI:1.91,5.82) odds, excellent. Conclusion factors may be important or dementia, extending relevant risk window.
