This research describes and assesses a terahertz metamaterial absorber (TMA) with simple easy-to-produce structure consisting of gold-silicon (optical)-gold design as refractive index sensing. Due to the high field limitation in detection regime, electromagnetic (EM) wave’s absorption reaches 99.40% at frequency 3.719 THz, including significant quality factor (Q-Factor) 65.77 figure merit, FoM, 21.49. The TMA has an remarkable sensitivity 1.215 THz/RIU can be used sensor (RIS). proposed absorber-based is susceptible changes (1.00 1.05) surrounding medium. For physical mechanism, fundamental peak mainly due simultaneous occurrence electric magnetic dipole resonances. feature being excellent RIS its sensing applications.

Abstract The emergence of metamaterials and their continued prosperity have built a powerful working platform for accurately manipulating the behavior electromagnetic waves, providing sufficient possibility realization metamaterial absorbers with outstanding performance. However, composed metallic materials typically possess many unfavorable factors, such as non‐adjustable absorption, easy oxidation, low‐melting, expensive preparation costs. selection dielectric provides excellent alternatives due to remarkable properties, thus dielectric‐based (DBMAs) attracted much attention. To promote breakthroughs in DBMAs guide future development, this work systematically deeply reviews recent research progress from four different but progressive aspects, including physical principles; classifications, material selections tunable properties; technologies; functional applications. Five types theories related mechanisms, Mie resonance, guided‐mode Anapole are briefly outlined explain having near‐perfect absorption Mainstream selections, structure designs, highlighted. Several widely utilized methods customizing given. Various practical applications sensing, stealth technology, solar energy interference suppression reviewed. Finally, some key challenges feasible solutions DBMAs’ development provided.
