The aquaculture sector faces uncertainty due to environmental changes, economic factors, and availability of food resources. Conventional aquatic feeds heavily depend on fishmeal. This results in sustainability challenges overexploitation wild fish stocks, rising costs, impacts, which has driven the search for innovative sustainable alternatives, such as insects. European Union legislation evolved allow use certain insect species aquafeeds, favoring market access approval additional species. However, regulations still need be standardized across countries substrates approved feed clearly defined, since nutritional composition insects diet. These ingredients have high potential replace fishmeal feeds, although, present regarding optimal growth digestibility, specially chitin composition, that overcome. its derivatives may also positive effects prebiotic immunomodulator. insect-based protein sources several benefits, efficient nutrient utilization, short maturation periods, profitability, addressing associated with conventional aquafeed ingredients. The utilisation of insect meal-based fish feed as a substitute for conventional is considered promising innovative alternative to boost circularity in aquaculture and aquaponics. Basic research on its use aquaponics limited. So far, no reports the effects waste water, derived from recirculating system using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) diets, were available growth performance lettuce. Therefore, this study aimed compare effect reusing water tilapia culture (as base nutrient solution) fed with diet (FM) BSF resource lettuce decoupled aquaponic systems. A hydroponics solution (HP) served control, inorganic fertilisers added all solutions reach comparable target concentrations. experiment was conducted controlled climate chamber nine separate units, three per treatment. Lettuce fresh dry weight, number leaves, relative leaf chlorophyll concentration, consumption, usage measured. Micro- macronutrients monitored time series. Similar yield seen treatments, significant values. Water plant also similar between while amount total fertiliser required 32% lower FM compared HP. Higher sodium concentrations found results confirm that BSF-based FM-based negative growth. Additionally, might be beneficial intensive, professional applications due concentration solution.

The welfare of fishes and aquatic invertebrates is important, several jurisdictions have included these taxa under regulation in recent years. Abstract The present study investigated the effect of replacing fishmeal (FM) with insect meal Hermetia illucens (HI) in diet Sparus aurata farmed inshore on growth, gut health, and microbiota composition. Two isolipidic (18% as fed) isoproteic (42% diets were tested at farm scale: a control without HI an experimental 11% FM. At end 25-week feeding trial, final body weight, specific growth rate, feed conversion hepatosomatic index not affected by diet. Gross morphology gastrointestinal tract liver was unchanged showed no obvious signs inflammation. High-throughput sequencing 16S rRNA gene amplicons (MiSeq platform, Illumina) used to characterize microbial community profile that Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria, Firmicutes dominant phyla gilthead seabream, regardless Dietary inclusion altered significantly decreasing abundance Cetobacterium increasing relative Oceanobacillus Paenibacillus genera. Our results clearly indicate alternative animal protein source positively affects seabream beneficial genera, thereby improving health maintaining performance S. from coastal farms.

Aquaculture has become one of the most attractive food production activities as it provides high-quality protein for growing human population. However, abiotic chronic stress fish in intensive farming leads to a detrimental condition that affects their health and somatic growth, comprising productive performance. This work aims comprehensively review impact alternative novel dietary sources on metabolism, antioxidative capacity under environmental/abiotic stressors. The documental research indicates ingredients from rendered animal by-products, insects, bacteria single-cell proteins, fungal organisms (e.g., yeast, filamentous fungus, mushrooms) benefit A set responses allows health, survival remain unaffected by feeding with during environmental stress. Those stimulate enzymes such catalase, glutathione peroxidase, selenoproteins counteract ROS effects. In addition, humoral immune system promotes immunoglobulin (IgM) cortisol plasmatic reduction. Further investigation must be carried out establish specific effect species. Additionally, mixture pre-treatment hydrolysates, solid fermentations, metabolite extraction potentialize beneficial effects diets chronically stressed fish.

The effects of dietary Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae meal on growth, plasma biochemistry and gut microbiota was tested in gilthead sea bream. Four isonitrogenous isolipidic extruded diets (50% protein; 14% lipid) with different levels HI larva (0% CTRL, 5% HI5, 10% HI10, 15% HI15) partial substitution to fish (FM) were administered triplicate groups over 113 days. Diets designed partially replace FM, using FM level for practical application. No significant differences (p > 0.05) observed terms final body weight, specific growth rate (SGR), feed intake (FI), conversion (FCR) as well efficiency parameters such protein ratio (PER), gross (GPE), lipid (GLE). At the end trial there not intake, efficiency. Among 20 analyzed, inclusion reduced iron (Fe), potassium (K), creatinine (CREA), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), creatine kinase (CK), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). reduction AST, ALT ALP might suggest a potential beneficial role liver integrity functionality. Concerning microbiome (GM) layout, able induce shift GM structure at any considered compared control diet increasing abundance Bacillaceae (mainly Bacillus Oceanobacillus) Paenibacillaceae (Paenibacillus). Taxa that can be involved chitin degradation has been recently recognized novel probiotics aquaculture. In conclusion, results utilization indicate successfully incorporated up aquafeed without negative Beyond being valid alternative source replacement this species, it displays health functional properties already low level.
