Abstract Potassium (K) has received less attention than nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) as a potential yield-limiting factor in cropping systems. Here we investigated the current K limitation intensive cereal systems of Southeast Asia based on nutrient balances, leaf status, long- short-term fertilizer trials, farmer surveys. We found that soil alone cannot meet plant requirements application is insufficient to avoid deficiencies large negative balances fields. Removing requires improved capacity predict response together with long-term, flexible crop straw management strategies. It likely similar limitations have emerged other world regions result decades replenishment potassium, which represent headwinds closing yield gaps existing farmland.

Palm oil production is a major source of income for millions smallholders in Indonesia. However, actual yield remains low relation to the attainable yield. While emphasis has been given planting material as factor explaining smallholder fields, role agronomic management received less attention. We assessed palm productivity independent fields quantified gaps and their causes using data on fresh fruit bunch (FFB) practices collected over two years across 977 fields. The gap was estimated each field difference between latter crop model, local weather field-specific soil age. Statistical techniques were used identify factors gaps. Average represented 42% yield, with largest occurring young plantations. Our analyses identified gaps, including nutrient management, harvest interval, weed control, pruning. Improved can help increase profit existing There an opportunity produce more current plantation area via better agronomy, generating positive economic impact at national levels, while reducing pressure clear new land cultivation. Research & extension programs should be re-oriented give management.

Smallholders account for ca. 40% of oil palm area in Indonesia but average yield remains low. Despite higher overall fertilizer use compared with other Southeast Asian countries, poor plant nutrition has been identified as a major factor explaining gaps smallholder fields and little is known about the underlying management drivers. To assess nutrient identify entry points to narrow existing gap via improved nutrition. We assessed balances nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) inter-relationships between use, leaf concentration, yield, using data collected from 977 over two years. There was positive relationship rates, especially (K). Only half received rates fertilized represented 45% 83% 28% 25% associated removal harvested yield. Applied generally rich N P, K Mg, leading imbalances. Additionally, farmers did not follow appropriate practices on placement splits. Improving current supply needed increase yields profit. Current agricultural research programs will benefit re-orienting efforts improve pathway fields, which, turn, requires strengthening extension services fill knowledge tune subsidy facilitate farmer access sources more suited crop.

Smallholders are responsible for a large share of global palm oil production. Yet, in Indonesia, the main producing country, smallholders' yields remain low. Better management practices, including short harvest interval (HI, number days between two rounds), could help to raise smallholder yields. However, at present, HI is long fields and drivers underlying this phenomenon poorly understood. We explored agronomic, socio-economic, institutional factors that underlie harvesting practices independent farming systems Indonesia assess scope sustainable intensification through shorter reduced losses. Combining methods from agronomy anthropology, we followed 950 farmers six representative locations across via farmer diaries over period years establish correlation with yield. To quantify relationship, conducted post-harvest field measurements, explain which impact did qualitative interviews surveys. The smallholders our study ranged 10 39 (average: 17-d). Half (>16-d). Key impacting include annual fresh fruit bunch (FFB) yield, total area per farmer, trusted labor availability, plantation accessibility, FFB price. Farmers responded low yield by prolonging increase productivity optimize transportation costs. This contributes better understanding relation systems, uncovering how socio-economic sometimes override agronomic considerations. Long can potentially lead loss loose fruits missed bunches, reduce quality overripe bunches. obtain benefits requires collective action incentives along supply chain streamline sale process.

Abstract The sustainability of oil palm plantations is particular concern from government. One the problems that has not yet been realized target replanting smallholder plantations. There are two systems namely conventional and underplanting system. Some farmers do because it prevents losing their major source revenue if they have in more than 2ha. Smallholder producers Sungai Bahar District with sampling approach employs simple random 44 sample 42 underplanting. According to research findings, system farmers’ income higher difference comparison 20.7%. The primary objective for many oil palm growers has been to enhance crop yield, which can be achieved through the cultivation of more productive varieties. Therefore, there is a need study new planting materials find optimum density in plantations.Oil growth and yield performance two (PS1 DxP) were determined using four densities three nitrogen fertiliser rates. The analysis variance fresh fruit bunch (FFB) its components over seventeen years recording show no significant interaction between density, progeny lineage (N).The N had effect on FFB where N1 rate was difference average by 0.89 t ha -1 as compared control. However, higher (N2) did not significantly increase since only 0.09 .The standard produces maximum cumulative yields harvesting.Vegetative shows that increased rachis length, frond height, leaf area index.PS1 exhibited shorter length measuring 3.08% less at 6.18 m, comparison DxP measured 6.33 m.Over 17 harvesting, 140 palms yielded highest amounting 426.96 24.19 yr respectively. However, it different 160 , cumulatively 425.68 24.12 practice continues preferred agronomic density.
